Winona, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's basketball team (14-12, 11-11 NSIC) defeated the Winona State Warriors (14-12, 12-10 NSIC) 59-49 Saturday afternoon in Winona, Minn., to wrap up the regular season. The win marks the tenth with for the Mavericks in the last twelve games.
In the first quarter the Mavericks built an early lead despite the pace of the game favoring the Warriors grind it out style, and after freshman guard
Anna Wanek drilled a three-pointer and
Mikayla Nachazel hit a jumper, Minnesota State took an 18-14 lead into the second quarter.
The Warriors fought back in the second quarter, cutting the Mavericks lead to three points several times. Minnesota State held off the charge before Winona State hit a late pair of free-throws to cut the Maverick lead to 31-30 going into halftime.
As a team the Mavericks shot 40.6% from the floor compared to 37.9% for the Warriors and held a 14-6 edge in bench scoring. Minnesota State had a balanced attack in the first half as
Ashley Reed led the way with six points and four rebounds while
Maddy Olson recorded five points and a pair of steals.
In the third quarter, the Mavericks went on an 11-2 run in the first six minutes to extend their lead. The Warriors made a late push, but had the ball stolen in the final seconds, leading a 44-36 Minnesota State lead going into the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter saw Winona State once again fight back, but after tying the game
Rachel Shumski grabbed a board on the offensive glass and put it back through contact before converting the and-one to push the lead back to three. Minnesota State then extended its lead to ten points which was too much for the Warriors to overcome, and the Mavericks won the game 59-49.
Tayla Stuttley, starting for the first time this season, led Minnesota State in scoring with 12-points while adding seven rebounds, two steals, and a block.
Reed finished the game with 10-points, five rebounds, and a pair of blocks while
Brooke Tonsfeldt recorded a double-double with 10-points and 11 rebounds.
As a team the Mavericks shot 37.7% from the field while holding the Warriors to 32.7% and also carrying a 40-31 edge on the glass. Minnesota State stole the ball 10 times in the game and blocked six shots as well.
The Mavericks will be on the road in the first round of the NSIC Tournament, traveling to St. Cloud, Minn., to take on the Huskies with tip-off scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
