Mavericks Lose Double Overtime Game With Vikings

MANKATO, Minn. --- The Minnesota State men's basketball team (16-9, 12-7 NSIC) lost in double overtime to the Augustana Vikings (15-10, 11-0 NSIC) 97-90 Friday night in Mankato, Minn.  This was the sixth overtime game for the Mavericks this season, setting a team record.

In the opening minutes that Mavericks quickly rolled off a 9-0 run.  The early lead, and six quick points from Tre Baumgardner, allowed Minnesota State to keep the edge and remain in the lead 20-12 with 9:41 to go in the half.

The Mavericks managed to extend their lead with a pair of three-pointers from Carlos Anderson, giving them a 32-19 lead with 4:52 to go.  Minnesota State managed to outscore Augustana 6-4 in the final minutes and took a 38-23 into the half.

Anderson led all players in scoring for the first half with thirteen points and added four boards and a steal.  Cameron Kirksey recorded eight points and four rebounds while Kevin Krieger had eight boards and a block in the first half.  As a team the Mavericks shot 40% from the field while limiting the Vikings to 31% and outrebounded Augustana 29-14.

Coming out of the half, Augustana went on a 9-2 run to narrow the Mavericks lead to eight points.  The Vikings cut the lead to three points before Minnesota State converted an and-one to take a 52-46 lead with 9:49 to go. 

The teams traded baskets over the next several minutes with the Vikings hitting a three-pointer to once again cut the Maverick lead to 62-59 with 4:44 to go.  With 2:42 to go, Augustana hit a mid-range floater to take their first lead of the game, 65-64, and on the next possession hit a three-pointer before Krieger responded three of his own.  After a Viking two-pointer, Kirksey drilled a tough shot through a foul, and with the free throw tied the game at 70 with :45 to go. 

The Mavericks forced a contested shot on the other end and on offense Anderson took the ball to the hoop to give Minnesota State a 72-70 lead with :27.3 to go.  Augustana drove to the hoop on their next possession and forced a foul then made both shots to tie the game at 72 with :10.6 to go.  The Mavericks weren't able to get a shot off, so the game ended up going to overtime. 

In overtime Kirksey started the scoring with a three-pointer in transition.  The Vikings split a pair of free throws and after a stop, drilled a jumper from the free throw line to tie the game with 1:52 to go.  After blocking a shot, Augustana found an open shooter in transition and hit a three to take a 78-75 lead with 1:13 to go.

On the Mavericks possession Jamal Nixon got to fouled on his way to the basked and drilled both free-throws to cut the lead to one point before the Vikings hit another shot.  On the other end of the floor Krieger made a contested three-pointer to tie the game with 15.6 to go.  The Vikings killed the clock but weren't able to make a basket, sending the game to its second overtime period. 

To start the second overtime, the Vikings rallied off six straight points, forcing the Mavericks to take a timeout.  After missing a pair of shots on offense, Minnesota State was forced to foul with 1:13 to go, and Augustana made one of the two to take a seven-point lead.  Baumgardner was fouled on the next possession and he made both free-throws.  The Vikings made a layup through contact and converted the and-one to take an eight-point lead with 48.6 to go and after a miss, the Mavericks were forced to foul once more, and the lead was too much to overcome as Augustana won the game 97-90. 

Anderson and Kirksey both led the way with 19-points and Kirksey added 13 boards for a double-double.  Krieger also recorded a double-double with 17-points and 13 rebounds.  As a team, the Mavericks bench outscored the Vikings bench 26-5 and made 11 three-pointers compared to seven. 

The Mavericks will take on Wayne State tomorrow at 5:30 p.m.  Before tip-off, the team will honor its seniors, Carlos Anderson and Karson Arrenholz.
