St. Paul, Minn. --- The Minnesota State men's basketball team (4-7, 2-3 NSIC) earned a wire-to-wire win against the Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears (3-6, 1-4 NSIC), 82-58 Wednesday night in St. Paul, Minn.
The Mavericks quickly built a 15-5 lead with
Ryland Holt completely dominating the opening minutes, hitting a short hook and a pair of three pointers early to force a Golden Bear timeout. The three-point shot continued to fall for MSU, as
Corvon Seales and
Kevin Krieger each hit two while
Holt added another to keep the Mavericks ahead 24-17 with 11:06 to go in the half
With 6:25 to go in the half,
Malik Willingham drilled a three from the left wing to give MSU a 30-20 lead. The Mavericks continued to extend their lead with a pair of dunks from
Kelby Kramer as well as another three from Seals to take a 37-22 lead with 2:46 to go in the half. MSU would go on to put six more points on the board while limiting Concordia-St. Paul, taking a 43-24 lead into halftime.
Holt and
Seales led all players with 12 points in the first half and the Mavericks made 11-19 attempts from beyond the arc.
Minnesota State opened the second half with a 12-6 run, extending its lead to 25-points with 14:46 to go in the second half. The Mavericks never allowed any thoughts of a comeback, continuing to steadily grow their lead, and ultimately coming away with the 82-58 win.
Holt finished the night with a game high 21-points to go along with 12 rebounds for a double-double, while making 7-12 field goals, including all four of his three-point attempts.
Willingham also finished with a double-double, scoring 17-points while posting 10 boards and seven assists.
Seales finished with 12-points while
Krieger and
Kramer both added 11 apiece.
As a team, the Mavericks made 17-35 three-point attempts and shot 42.9% from the field, compared to seven and 36.2% for the Golden Bears. MSU also outrebounded CSP 45-34 and blocked eight shots.
The Maverick's will return home to finish the 2019 portion of the season with a re-match against the Golden Bears, tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
