Mankato, Minn. – The No. 13 Minnesota State soccer team ended the regular season with a 1-0 loss to No. 20 Concordia-St. Paul Friday afternoon at The Pitch.
With the loss, the Mavericks fall to 15-3-0 (12-3-0 NSIC) after their nine match win streak was snapped by the Golden Bears. This is also the first time that CSP has ever defeated MSU all-time.
The first 45 minutes of the match went scoreless on a cold November day with a slick playing surface due to the snow and ice that fell earlier in the week. The Mavericks held a slight shot advantage heading into the locker room at halftime at 5-4. The second half looked to be more of the same until Golden Bear freshman
Katie Anderson scored a goal in the 75th minute, which proved to be the difference. The ball went right over the outstretched arms of senior goalkeeper
Alexa Rabune and Minnesota State was unable to tie the match up before the final horn sounded.
The Mavericks held a 9-6 shot advantage throughout the game, but the Golden Bears put one more shot on net with the 4-3 advantage. MSU had plenty of corner kick opportunities with five compared to CSP's one.
Rabune (13-2-0) made a total of three saves in the contest and dropped her first decision in net since Sept. 29 against St. Cloud State in double overtime.
Minnesota State will now look to the NSIC Tournament, which it has won the last three consecutive seasons. The Mavericks will host their first round match at The Pitch next Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. MSU will await its seed and who it will be playing in the first round until all matches finish up on Friday afternoon.
