St. Paul, Minn. --- The No. 13 Minnesota State soccer team captured its fourth straight, and eighth overall, NSIC Tournament Championship win a 3-0 shutout over No. 20 Concordia-St. Paul on Sunday afternoon at Sea Foam Stadium.
The third-seeded Mavericks earned an automatic bid to the 2019 NCAA Tournament with the win over the top-seeded Golden Bears. This is the ninth straight season that the Mavericks will play in the NCAA Tournament and is their 14th appearance overall.
The Mavericks scored two goals within six minutes of each other in the first half in the 32nd and 38th minutes to take control of the match. Sophomore
Brynn Desens scored her eighth goal of the season, and the game winning goal, by taking a through ball from senior
Taylor Kenealy and scoring in the low left corner. Sophomore
Jenny Vetter then struck for her 18th goal of the season to give the Mavericks a 2-0 lead heading into halftime. Desens' free kick right outside of the box was blocked and sophomore
Nadia Lowery slid the ball to Vetter right in front of the net for the goal.
Vetter scored her team leading 19th goal of the season in the second half for the final goal of the match. Vetter took a loose ball in the box and buried it right inside the right post for the goal. The goal moved Vetter into a tie for third for goals scored in a single season at MSU.
Senior
Alexa Rabune (15-2-1) earned her eighth sole shutout of the season after making two saves in the win.
Minnesota State finished with a 15-8 shot advantage, including a 12-2 lead in shots on goal. The Mavericks also had three corner kicks to the Golden Bears two in the match.
Five Mavericks were named to the 2019 NSIC Soccer All-Tournament team. They are seniors
Bri Ciaccio,
Alesha Duccini, Kenealy, Rabune and then Vetter as well. In addition, Vetter was also named the 2019 NSIC Tournament MVP.
The Mavericks will now wait to see where they will be playing as the NCAA DII Women's Soccer selection show will be streamed online on Monday at 5:00 p.m., on NCAA.com.
