Mavericks Set to Host Southwest Minnesota State and Sioux Falls

MANKATO, Minn. --- The Minnesota State volleyball team will host the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs Friday night, Sept. 21st, in Taylor Center at 6:00 p.m., and will host Sioux Falls Saturday at 2:00 p.m.

Mavericks at a Glance: The Mavericks enter the week with a 10-3 (3-2 NSIC) overall record after dropping a Tuesday night match against #3 Concordia-St. Paul 3-0, defeating the Augustana Vikings on the road 3-1 and coming up short on a comeback against #18 Wayne State, who took the match 3-2.

Impact Mavericks: Morgan Olson leads the Mavericks with a team best 213 kills and a .391 attacking percentage. Mara Quam has compiled 224 digs to begin the year, and Micayla Porter leads the teams in assists with 313.

By the Numbers: As a team this season, Minnesota State has posted 13.6 kills per set in comparison to its opponents 11.1. Additionally, the Mavericks add 13.4 assists per set and 13.7 digs per set.

Young Talent: The freshman class has contributed 136 digs, 271 assists, 71 kills, and 31 blocks this season. Freshman Lauren Lowry is second on the team with 205 assists and Dana Schindler is fourth on the team with 55 kills.

Scouting Southwest Minnesota State: Southwest Minnesota State is located in Marshall, Minn., and is a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC). The Mustangs have started their season 9-4 (4-1 NSIC). Southwest Minnesota State is coached by Terry Culhane who is in his 15th season as coach of the Mustangs.

As a team this season, Southwest Minnesota State posts 13.9 kills per set while their opponents average 11.5 The Mustangs also total 13.1 assists per set and 17.6 digs per set.

Senior Taylor Reiss is the leading attacker for the Mustangs with 256 kills on the season. Sophomore Emma Thomssen is the primary setter for Southwest Minnesota State and has 566 assists on the season.

Scouting Sioux Falls: Sioux Falls is located in Sioux Falls, S.D., and is a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC). The Cougars are 8-5 (3-2 NSIC) so far this season. Sioux Falls is led by head coach Joel McCartney who is in his eighth season with the Cougars.

As a team this season, the Cougars total 14.0 kills in comparison to its opponents' 12.2. Additionally, Sioux Falls posts 13.2 assists per set and 13.9 digs per set.

Senior Bria Barfnecht leads a balanced attack with 157 kills while senior Lexi Scott is second with 138. Sophomore Krista Goerger is the leading setter for the Cougars with 496 assists. Junior Kasandra Springer leads Sioux Falls in digs with 158 on the season.

Looking Ahead: The Mavericks will travel for a pair of conference matchups next weekend when they go to Moorhead, Minn., Friday Sept. 28th at 6:00 p.m. to take on the Dragons. Saturday, Sept. 29th at 6:00 p.m., they will travel to Aberdeen, S.D. and will face Northern State.
