Mankato, Minn.--- Minnesota State soccer rolls past Gustavus Adolphus 4-0 on Friday at The Pitch.
Minnesota State lead from start to finish while dealing with some rain early in the first half. The Mavericks scored one goal in the first half off the foot of redshirt freshman defender
Brooke Valiukas in the 33rd minute and was assisted by freshman forward
Jenny Vetter.The second half is when the Mavericks started pouring it on when they scored three goals in the matter of 20 minutes. In the 49th minute, junior forward/midfielder
Dakota Wendell headed the ball into the back of the net from the corner kick assist of senior defender
Abby Hausken. Less than ten minutes later, senior forward
Morgan Cottew got her second goal of the preseason again assisted by Hausken. The final goal came in the 68th minute when freshman forward
Brynn Desens was able to get by the opposing goalkeeper and score being assisted by sophomore midfielder
Danielle Tazic, her second assist of the preseason.
In part of being an exhibition game, The Mavericks and Gusties did a simulated shootout at the end. Both teams ended up making six out of ten attempts.
Mavericks goalkeepers made a total of three saves with
Erin Leary having two and
Alexa Rabune tallying one. The Gusties goalkeepers made seven saves total with Leah Pavlish getting four and Abby Goodno having three.
MSU led in total shots by a wide margin of 20-4, including 11-3 shots on goal. 13 of those Mavericks shots came in the second half where they dominated having possession of the ball.
The Mavericks hit the road for their final preseason game on Sunday where they will take on Luther College in Decorah, Iowa at 7:00 p.m. The regular season will kick off on Thursday, Aug. 30 when Sioux Falls comes into town for a nonconference matchup starting at 3:00 p.m. at The Pitch.
