Mavericks Lengthen Winning Streak to 12 Games with Sweep of Cougars

Sioux Falls, S.D. --- Minnesota State baseball lengthened its season-long winning streak to 12 games with a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader sweep of Sioux Falls on Thursday at Sioux Falls Stadium. Minnesota State won the first game 3-1 and the second game 6-0.

The Mavericks received outstanding starting pitching from senior right-hander Dalton Roach (7-0, 2.40 ERA) in game one and senior left-hander Aaron Rozek (5-1, 1.31 ERA) in game two.

Minnesota State improved to 22-7 (17-3 NSIC) and Sioux Falls dropped to 8-20 (8-10 NSIC).

GAME 1 – Minnesota State 3, Sioux Falls 1

The Maverick offense took advantage of its opportunities and Dalton Roach tossed a seven-inning complete game in a 3-1 win in game one.

The Mavericks scored single runs in the first and second innings to go ahead 2-0. In the first inning, senior shortstop Luke Waldek singled with one out and sophomore first baseman Ty Buck followed with a walk. Senior catcher Noah Bluth hit a ground ball to the shortstop and the shortstop threw the ball away — allowing Waldek to come around to score the first run of the game. In the second inning, senior center fielder Josh Wenzel drove in sophomore third baseman Tory Miller with a single to right field.

After the Cougars scored their lone run of the game in the fourth inning, the Mavericks capped off the scoring with a single run in the fifth to make the final score 3-1. Sophomore outfielder Teddy Petersen hit a sacrifice fly to center field and Buck scored on the play.

Roach (7-0), a senior right-hander, did the rest — limiting the Cougars to one earned run on six hits in the complete game. He struck out six without walking a batter.

Stuart Maes (1-6) was the pitcher of record on the short end after he allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits over 2 2/3 innings. Maes walked three and struck out one.

Josh Wenzel paced the Maverick offense by going 2-of-3 at the plate with a double and an RBI.

GAME 2 – Minnesota State 6, Sioux Falls 0

Aaron Rozek and Nick Belzer combined for a shutout as the Mavericks won game two, 6-0.

Rozek (5-1), a senior left-hander, was nearly unhittable over the first eight innings of the game. Rozek, who did not allow a hit until there was one out in the fourth inning, held the Cougars to two singles over eight scoreless innings. He struck out seven, walked four and lowered his season ERA from 1.58 to 1.31. Belzer, a junior right-hander, tossed a scoreless ninth inning — striking out two, walking none and allowing one single.

The Maverick offense scored single runs in each of the first three innings, two in the eighth and one in the ninth.

junior right fielder Tyler Berg and sophomore first baseman Ty Buck each tallied multi-hit games for the Mavericks. Berg went 3-of-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI. Buck was 2-of-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Both of Bucks' hits were doubles.

Keenahn Coyle (1-2) was charged with the loss — allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits over 5 2/3 innings. Coyle struck out seven and walked three.

Minnesota State returns to the diamond for an NSIC doubleheader with Bemidji State at 10:00 a.m., on Monday at Superior High School in Superior, Wis.
