Auburndale, Fla. --- No. 7 Minnesota State baseball suffered a 1-0 setback against Walsh in a nonconference game on Wednesday at Lake Myrtle Park.
Junior right-handed
Nick Belzer (0-1) was strong on the mound for Minnesota State (4-4) — limiting the Cavaliers (4-5) to one run on four hits over six innings. Belzer struck out six and walked none, but the Maverick offense was unable to provide Belzer with any offensive support.
The Mavericks were limited to six hits by
Justin Hovorka (1-1), who tossed a complete game shutout with five walks and five strikeouts for the Cavaliers. Minnesota State had the potential tying run on third base with one out in the seventh inning following a double by senior shortstop
Luke Waldek and a wild pitch, but the next two batters grounded out to end the inning. Minnesota State also had runners on first and third with two outs in the ninth, but were unable to get the game-tying hit.
The Cavaliers scored the lone run of the game in the top of the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Marcus Bobb.
Junior right-hander
Carlo Graffeo pitched three innings in relief for the Mavericks. He struck out six, walked none, and allowed one hit.
Waldek reached base four times in the game — with two walks, a single and a double.
Minnesota State concludes its Florida trip with a game against Lewis at 9:30 a.m. CST on Thursday at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Fla.
