CLERMONT, Fla. ---- The No. 1 Minnesota State softball fell to Grand Valley State, 6-1, and No. 19 Winona State, 8-5, Sunday afternoon at the NTC Spring Games.
In game one, Grand Valley State (4-3) snapped Minnesota State's (11-2) 11-game win streak, 6-1. Sophomore pitcher
Caitlin Stone (2-1) takes the loss tossing two strikeouts. Freshman
Lexi Schoper and sophomore
Bria Majeski both saw one inning of work each totaling two strike outs each. Junior Allison Lipovsky (2-2) earns the win for Lakers with six strikeouts in a complete game.
Following a scoreless opening frame, the Lakers pushed the first two runs of the game across with scores from junior Shannon Flaherty and freshman Taylor Rieger to make the score 2-0 in the second inning. Two frames later, Grand Valley State tacked on a two-run home run from freshman Nikoma Holmen to increase its lead to 4-0 in the fifth inning.
Senior
Jessica Meidl responded for Minnesota State in the sixth frame delivering her sixth double of the season down the left field line to score junior
McKenzie Paap cutting the deficit to three, 4-1. The Lakers retaliated adding two more runs in the seventh to stretch their lead to 6-1. Minnesota State could not rally and went on to drop its first game of the season, 6-1.
Freshman
Torey Richards totaled a team-best two hits, while Paap and Meidl each added one. Grand Valley State posted 13 hits as a team in comparison to Minnesota State's four.
In game two, Minnesota State suffered an 8-5 setback to No. 19 Winona State (11-2). Freshman
Mackenzie Ward(5-1) takes the loss with three strikeouts in 5.2 innings. Majeski finished the final inning for the Mavericks allowing no hits. Senior McKenna Larsen (4-2) picks up the win for the Warriors totaling three strikeouts.
Winona State tallied the first run of the game with a score from freshman Carly Kordich, 1-0, in the opening frame. Minnesota State evened the score, 1-1, in the third frame after an RBI double from sophomore
Carly Esselman. The Mavericks then stretched their lead up to three, 4-1, after sophomore
Amber Kral notched an unearned run to cap the four-run third frame.
The Warriors chipped their way back to lock the contest, 4-4, following an unearned run from Kordich in the fifth stanza. Junior
Cori Kennedy responded for Minnesota State launching her first home run of the season over the left field wall to reclaim the edge, 5-4, in the sixth inning. However, Winona State answered with a four-run sixth frame put the game out of reach, 8-5. The Mavericks could not rally in the top of seventh leaving one stranded and went on to fall, 8-5.
Esselman and Kennedy paced Minnesota State with two hits and one RBI each. The Warriors held the advantage in hits, 8-5.
Minnesota State will return action tomorrow at the NTC Spring Games against Holy Family at 12:00 p.m., before finishing the day against Concordia College – New York at 6:00 p.m. (CST)
