Mavericks Fall to No. 12 Vikings in NSIC Tournament

Senior Claire Ziegler becomes the 22nd member of the MSU 1,000-Career Point Club

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. ---  Four Mavericks reached double figures in scoring, but the Minnesota State women's basketball team fell to No. 12 Augustana, 81-53, in the NSIC Tournament quarterfinals at the Sanford Pentagon Sunday night.

Minnesota State finishes the season with a 13-17 (10-12 NSIC) overall record and won seven of its final 10 games. This season marks the first time since the 2014-15 season that the Mavericks advanced to the NSIC Tournament quarterfinal round.

Senior Claire Ziegler posted 10 points to become the 22nd member of the MSU 1000-Career Point Club with 1,001 points. Ziegler finishes her Maverick career with 1,001 points and 643 rebounds in 95 games.

Both teams exchanged baskets to open the contest until Minnesota State captured its first lead of the night, 6-5, after senior Claire Jordan drained a triple at the 8:04 mark. The Vikings (25-3) then used a 9-2 run to jump out to a 15-7 edge. Ziegler halted the run connecting on a layup with 4:52 on the clock. Augustana led after the first frame, 21-12.

The Vikings controlled the pace in the second frame establishing a quick 8-1 run to grow their edge to 29-13 by the 7:50 mark. Junior Monica Muth was able to find senior Mackenzie Dahl down low for the layup to end the run, 29-15, with 7:29 on the clock. Augustana then built its largest lead of half, 40-21, with 1:47 to play in the half. Minnesota State trailed at the intermission, 42-25.

At the half, Minnesota State shot 32.1% from the field in comparison to Augustana's 55.2%. The Vikings also posted 24 points in the paint in comparison to the Mavericks 10. Jordan paced Minnesota State with six points. Dahl also tallied six points shooting three-of-three from the field, while Ziegler contributed six rebounds and four points.

Minnesota State opened the second half chipping the deficit down to 15, 46-31, after Jordan netted a layup at the 7:56 mark. Augustana once again answered with an 11-2 run to expand its lead to 57-33 with 4:22 on the clock. The Mavericks finished the quarter with an 8-2 run of their own to make the score 61-41 after three. Muth led the charge for MSU with four points, while Ziegler and Dahl added a basket each during the streak.

Augustana controlled the pace in the final frame outscoring Minnesota State, 20-12. Ziegler attempted to create a late rally knocking down back-to-back layups on the fast break to make the score 68-46 with 7:48 remaining. However, the Mavericks could not get any closer and went on to drop the contest, 81-53.

As a team, Augustana held the edge in rebounds (45-38) and assists (23-10). The Vikings shot 49.2% from the field in comparison to the Mavericks 30.5%.

Muth netted a team-high 11 points with seven rebounds and three assists. Ziegler contributed 10 points and team-best nine rebounds. Jordan and Dahl rounded out the top performers chipping in 10 points each.
