Columbus, Ohio. --- Minnesota State women's hockey allowed three first-period goals and went on to lose 6-0 in the first game of a best-of-three Western Collegiate Hockey Association Quarterfinal series at No. 6 Ohio State on Friday evening.
Minnesota State (5-27-1) fell behind Ohio State (22-9-4) 3-0 in the first period. The Buckeye goals were scored by
Charly Dahlquist,
Maddy Field and
Lauren Boyle at 1:56, 16:27 and 18:45, respectively. Boyle's goal came on the power play. The Mavericks trailed 14-3 in shots on goal at the first intermission.,
The Mavericks held a 14-5 edge in shots on goal in the second period, but the Buckeyes tallied the only goal – scored by
Emma Maltais at the 1:32 mark – to put the Mavericks down 4-0 going into the second intermission.
The Buckeyes added two more goals in the third period to make the final score 6-0. Field scored both goals – at 3:34 and 5:51 – to record a hat trick in the game.
Sophomore
Chloe Crosby (4-12-1) started in goal for Minnesota State – making 16 saves and allowing all six goals. Junior netminder
Katie Bidulka made five saves in relief.
The Mavericks finished 0-of-2 on the power play and the Buckeyes went 1-of-3.
Minnesota State was outshot 27-21 in the game.
Minnesota State and Ohio State are back in action for game two of their best-of-three WCHA Quarterfinal series at 2:07 p.m. CST on Saturday at OSU Ice Rink.
