Mavericks Wrap Up Regular Season Play on the Road

MANKATO, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's basketball team is set to wrap up regular season play on the road at Southwest Minnesota State on Friday at 6:00 p.m. The Mavericks will then conclude the weekend at Sioux Falls on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m.

Mavericks at a Glance: Minnesota State (10-16, 8-12 NSIC) enters the weekend on a two-game win streak. Last weekend, the Mavericks topped Upper Iowa, 68-43, and then rolled past Winona State, 90-67. 

Impact Mavericks: Senior Claire Ziegler leads Minnesota State in points per game (12.0) and rebounds (7.5). Senior Claire Jordan is also netting double figures with 10.1 points per contest. Junior Monica Muth is handing out a team-high 2.1 assists with 7.2 points per game.  

Stat Pack: Minnesota State is ranked fourth in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) in rebounding (39.1) and first in offensive rebounds (14.0). The Mavericks are also totaling 66.8 points per game and distributing 11.3 assists per contest. 

Home Sweet Home: Minnesota State has won its last five games in Taylor Center. Over that stretch, the Mavericks are outscoring opponents by 23.6 points per game. MSU has won seven games at home this season. 

Shooting the Lights Out: Minnesota State netted a season-high 14 three pointers against Winona State last weekend. The last time the Mavericks posted more than 10 triples in a game was when MSU netted 11 against Northern State on Jan. 29, 2016. Additionally, it is the most three pointers since Minnesota State dropped 17 against Gustavus Adolphus on Nov. 26, 2012. Senior Claire Jordan led the Mavericks against Winona State with a game-high 21 points and shot 83.3% (5-6) from downtown. 

Disrupting Opponents: Sophomore Taylor Klug matched a career-best four steals against Upper Iowa last weekend. The guard ranks 12th in the NSIC with 1.4 steals per game. Klug has totaled at least three steals in seven games this season. 

Ziegler by the Numbers: Senior Claire Ziegler ranks in the top-20 in four statistical categories in the NSIC this season. The forward is sixth in rebounds per game (7.5), 13th in steals per contest (1.4), 18th in blocked shots per contest (.9), and, 20th in points per game (12.0).

Pursuing 1,000: Senior Claire Ziegler is looking to become the 22nd member of the MSU 1,000-Career Point Club. The Mankato, Minn., native has totaled 945 points in 91 career games. Lisa Walters (84-88) is the all-time leader with 2,072 career points.  
From the Field: Minnesota State posted a season-high 53.4% (31-58) from the field against Winona State last weekend.  Senior Claire Ziegler is shooting a team-best 48.3% from the field this season.  

High Scoring: Minnesota State netted a season-best 90 points against Winona State last weekend. The Mavericks shot a season-high 53.4% from the field and netted a season-best 14 three pointers. 

Scouting Southwest Minnesota State: Southwest Minnesota State (5-18, 4-16 NSIC) enters the weekend on a two-game losing streak. Most recently, SMSU dropped a 77-58 decision to No. 5 Augustana. The Mustangs are led by second year head coach Tom Webb. 

As a team, SMSU is totaling 62.6 points per game in comparison to its opponents 71.9. The Mustangs are also pulling down 38.0 rebounds and handing out 9.9 assists per contest. 

Earlier this season, Minnesota State dismantled Southwest Minnesota State, 81-53, at Taylor Center. The Mavericks have won the last 21 meetings and lead the all-time series, 32-14. 

Scouting Sioux Falls: Sioux Falls (14-10, 11-9 NSIC) has dropped five of its last six games and most recently fell at Wayne State, 51-64. The Cougars are led by Travis Traphagen who is in his 10th season at the helm. 

As a unit, Sioux Falls is posting 65.4 points per game in comparison to its opponents 61.6. The Cougars also add 37.2 rebounds and 14.0 assists per contest. 

Earlier this season, Sioux Falls edged Minnesota State, 74-71. The Cougars have won the last five match ups and hold the slight edge in the all-time series, 7-4. 

Looking Ahead: Minnesota State will play in the first round of the NSIC Tournament on Feb. 21. Time and location is to be announced at a later date.
