Mavericks Tie Beavers then Get Shootout Win

BEMIDJI, Minn. --- Minnesota State ties Bemidji State 0-0 and earns a shootout win Saturday afternoon at the Sanford Center.

The first period was evenly played as both teams had seven shots on goal and made seven saves. Each team also won nine faceoffs a piece. The Mavericks were able to kill off the first penalty of the game and are now 16-16 on the season. Freshman Anna Wilgren led the way defensively in the first period with three blocked shots.

The game remained scoreless through the second period as the Mavericks were killing off penalties all period. A total of three penalties were called against Minnesota State in the period with one carrying over into the third period. Even with those three penalties, the Mavericks outshot the Beavers 12-6 and MSU blocked 11 BSU shots in the period.

The Mavericks killed off another penalty in the third period, making that a total of five for the game. A prime opportunity came when Bemidji State was called for an interference penalty late in the period and carried over into overtime. Minnesota State was unable to capitalize and the game ended in a 0-0 tie with both teams picking up a point.

In the first two rounds of the shootout, both teams failed to score with freshman Abigail Levy making two great saves. The Beavers were able to get their third try to go past Levy and the Mavericks needed to answer to stay in the shootout. Junior Sofia Poinar stepped up and was able to beat the Beaver goaltender over her shoulder, under the pipe. Levy made another great save and then junior Emily Antony scored in the fourth round to give the Mavericks a 2-1 shootout win.

Levy earned her second shutout of the season and made 25 saves in the game with the bulk of the work coming in the third period where she made 10 saves.
