Mavericks Travel to Bemidji State in WCHA Battle

MANKATO, Minn. --- Minnesota State women's hockey travels to Bemidji, Minn. to take on the Beavers in a weekend series. The series will start on Friday at 6:07 p.m. The series concludes on Saturday at 3:07 p.m., with both games being held at the Sanford Center.

Minnesota State All-Time: The MSU women's hockey program, started in 1998-99. is currently in its 21st season of competition and has compiled a 179-467-57 (.295) record in 703 total games played. The Mavericks are in their 20th year as members of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association and hold a 112-370-46 (.256) in 528 games played.

Last Time on the Ice: Minnesota State (3-3-0, 1-3-0-0 WCHA) opened its 2018-19 WCHA home schedule with a series split against St. Cloud State on Oct. 19-20. The Mavericks won 3-1 on the 19th and lost 2-1 on the 20th.

The Mavericks came back from a 1-0 deficit after the first period before winning last Friday's contest 3-1. Senior Rebekah Kolstad had the game-tying goal at the 4:17 mark in the second period. Twenty seconds later, freshman Brooke Bryant garnered her first goal and game-winning goal of her collegiate career. Senior Jordan McLaughlin got an insurance goal on an empty net with under two minutes to play in the third period to cap off the 3-1 win.

On Saturday, the Mavericks faced another 1-0 deficit after the first period. Junior McKenzie Sederberg scored her first goal of the season to even the score at one in the second period. MSU ultimately fell 2-1 after SCSU scored the eventual game-winning goal 30 seconds into the third period.

In net, freshman Abigail Levy started both games for the Mavericks, collecting a win and a loss. Levy has started in all six games this season. On the weekend, Levy made 47 saves on 50 opportunities, garnered a 1.52 goals-against average and have a save percentage of .940.

Scouting Bemidji State: The Beavers (0-6-0, 0-2-0-0 WCHA) were swept last weekend in their WCHA opening series on the road against #5 Minnesota Duluth. SCSU lost 6-1 last Friday and 2-0 last Saturday. In the first three series of their season, the Beavers have faced then #1 Clarkson, Providence, who was receiving votes, and #5 Minnesota Duluth. 

The Beavers offense features sophomore Paige Beebe, who leads BSU with two  goals this season (2-0--2). Junior Abby Halluska and sophomore Tina Kampa, have each garnered a goal and two assists (1-2--3). 

In net, Bemidji State State features the duo of sophomores Lauren Bench and Kerigan Dowhy. Both have started three games for the Beavers and have a record of 0-3 each. Together, they hold a 4.20 goals against average, a .824 save percentage and 113 saves so far this season.

Facing Bemidji State: All-time, the Mavericks are 28-40-10 against the Beavers. The last time the two teams met was Feb. 2-3, 2018 when MSU took the first game 3-1 and BSU won the second game 5-3 at Verizon Center.

Looking Ahead: The Mavericks will return to Verizon Center to face #1 Wisconsin. Friday, Nov. 2 the game will begin at 6:07 p.m., and on Saturday, Nov. 3 the puck will drop at 2:07 p.m.
