#11 Mavericks Down Terriers, 5-3, to Earn Weekend Sweep

Mankato, Minn. --- Minnesota State downed 11th-rated Boston University by a 5-3 margin in gaining the nonconference sweep over the visiting Terriers.

Dating back to last year, the Mavericks now have won four straight games over the Terriers.

Three goals in the first period set the tone for the Mavericks, who never trailed in the contest.

Sophomore forward Jared Spooner, who ended up with a two-point night, got things rolling at 6:08 of the period, when he deflected a shot from the blue line by junior defenseman Edwin Hookenson. Three minutes later, with the Mavericks on a power play, sophomore defenseman Connor Mackey's one-timer from the point found the back of the net to give Minnesota State a 2-0 lead. Sophomore defenseman Riese Zmolek scored his first goal of the season to beat the Boston University netminder Jake Oettinger on his glove side on a partial breakaway to put Minnesota State in front 3-0 at the 17:40 mark.

Boston University had Minnesota State's number for most of the second period out-scoring the Mavericks 3-1. Joel Farabee scored a short-handed goal for BU 7:38 into the period to cut the deficit to 3-1. Two minutes later, Bobo Carpenter tipped in a shot off of a David Farrance shot make the score. Then, with less than 30 seconds left in the period, BU scored the game-tying goal when Shane Bowers got a cross ice pass right next to the net and put it in. However, the Mavericks had an answer with one second left on the clock when junior forward Charlie Gerard scored his first of the season, taking a pass from Parker Tuomie before depositing the puck into the net in putting the Mavericks back on top 4-3.

Gerard's goal stood up as the game-winner, the first game-winning goal of his career. The Mavericks tacked on an insurance goal when junior center Marc Michaelis scored an empty net goal with 21 seconds remaining in the game to seal the deal.

Freshman Dryden McKay earned his second straight victory making 28 saves on 31 shots with a bulk of the work coming in the second period, where he was forced to make 15 saves. His counterpart from BU, Jake Oettinger, took his second straight loss while making 26 saves on 31 opportunities.

Spooner and Michaelis each had a goal and an assist on the night while junior forward Parker Tuomie chipped in with two helpers.

Minnesota State went one-four-four on power play opportunities while killing all five of Boston University's chances.

The Mavericks (2-0-0) hit the road next weekend as they travel to Grand Forks, N.D., to take on the University of North Dakota. Friday night's game will begin at 7:37 p.m., and Saturday night's puck will drop at 7:07 p.m.
