Minnesota State Set to Take on Pair of NSIC South Opponents on the Road

MANKATO, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's basketball team continues Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play on the road at No. 12 Augustana on Friday at 6:00 p.m. The Mavericks will then conclude the road trip at Wayne State on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m.

Mavericks at a Glance: Minnesota State (4-9, 2-5 NSIC) enters the week having dropped its last two contests. Most recently, the Mavericks fell to No. 19 Northern State, 73-49. 

Impact Mavericks: Senior Claire Ziegler sets the standard for Minnesota State with a team-best 10.6 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. Junior Monica Muth has started every game this season and is netting 7.5 points to go along with 5.5 rebounds per contest. Senior Logan Anderson rounds out the top performers averaging 9.1 points per game. 

Stat Pack: As a team this season, Minnesota State is totaling 62.7 points per game in comparison to its opponents' 70.8. The Mavericks are also collecting 38.9 rebounds per game and handing out 9.6 assists per contest.  

Double-Double Round Three: Junior Monica Muth tallied her second straight and third double-double of the season against MSU Moorhead last week. The Cambridge, Wis., native collected a career-best 12 rebounds and netted 11 points against the Dragons.

Controlling the Boards: The Mavericks are currently slotted sixth in the NSIC with 38.9 rebounds per game and rank second in offensive rebounds with 13.4 per contest. Minnesota State pulled down a season-high 53 rebounds against Palm Beach Atlantic and Chaminade. 

Creating Possessions: The Mavericks created a season-best 10 steals against No. 19 Northern State last week. Freshman Brooke Tonsfeldt generated a team-best three steals while sophomore Taylor Drost and Senior Logan Anderson contributed two each. 

Off the Bench: Sophomore Taylor Klug averaged 8.0 points off the bench last weekend. The Colgate, Wis., native dropped 11 points against MSU Moorhead on 5-of-10 shooting from the field. She has recorded double digit scoring in  three of the last four games.  

Facing the Top-25: The Mavericks are 0-1 this season when facing a Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) top-25 opponent. Most recently, Minnesota State fell to No. 19 Northern State, 73-49. 

Chasing the 800-point/500 Rebound Club: Senior Claire Ziegler is looking to become the 14th member of the MSU 800-point/500 rebound club. She currently sits  at  787 points and 491 rebounds over 79 career games. 

100th Win Watch: Head Coach Emilee Thiesse has totaled 99 career wins with an overall career record of 99-60 (74-43 NSIC). She has led the Mavericks to two NCAA postseason appearances and boasts a 55-21 (.723) record at Taylor Center. 

Scouting #12 Augustana: Augustana (12-0, 8-0 NSIC) enters the week leading the NSIC and slotted No. 12 in the latest WBCA Coaches Poll. Most recently, the Vikings downed Sioux Falls, 76-65. Augustana is led by Dave Krauth who is in his 28th season. 

As a unit, Augustana leads the NSIC with 83.9 points per game. The Vikings are also passing out a NSIC-best 20.08 assists and add 38.9 rebounds per game. 

In their most recent encounter this season, Augustana topped Minnesota State, 80-55, at Taylor Center. The Vikings have won the last five meetings and lead the all-time series, 45-29.

Scouting Wayne State: Wayne State in located in Wayne, Neb., and enters the week with a 12-4 (6-2 NSIC) overall record. The Wildcats have won their last two games and most recently cruised past Southwest Minnesota State, 76-60. Wayne State is led by 10th year head coach Chris Kielsmeier. 

As a team, the Wildcats are posting 76.4 points per game in comparison to their opponents 63.0. Wayne State is also snatching 38.8 rebounds and handing out 16.3 assists per game. 

In their most recent meeting this season, the Wildcats bested the Mavericks, 81-69, at Taylor Center. Wayne State has won the last two meetings and holds the advantage in the all-time series, 17-7. 

Looking Ahead: Minnesota State will travel to Minot State on Jan. 12. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
