BISMARCK, N.D. --- Four Mavericks reached double figures in scoring but Minnesota State fell short in overtime at U-Mary, 90-84, Saturday afternoon at the McDowell Activity Center.
Both teams went back and forth in the opening frame which featured four ties. U-Mary got the scoring started with a quick 4-0 lead. Minnesota State responded with an 8-3 run ignited by sophomore
Taylor Klug coming off the bench and netting a three. The hot streak allowed the Mavericks to claim an 8-7 edge by the 6:25 mark. The Marauders battled back to steal the lead, 13-11, after Christal Hearn connected on a layup. U-Mary led after the one, 23-21.
Both teams continued to exchange baskets until the Marauders assembled a 5-1 run to make the score 30-25 with 6:03 to play in the half. Junior
Monica Muth was able to find Klug down low to end the run with a layup. U-Mary then went on to build its largest lead of the half, 37-30, with the help of a Macy Williams three at the 1:14 mark. Minnesota State trailed at the half, 37-30.
At the intermission, Klug led the Mavericks with 12 points, two steals and 1 assist. Minnesota State shot 39.3% from the field and 66.7% from behind the arc. U-Mary shot 53.6% from the field and 30.0% from three.
The Marauders connected on two quick buckets to open the second half to make the score 41-30 at the 8:09 mark. The Mavericks battled back with six unanswered points to pull within five, 41-36, after Muth found senior
Claire Ziegler in the paint for layup. Later in the frame, U-Mary stretched its lead back up to seven, 50-43, following a Cassie Askvig layup with 2:19 on the clock. Minnesota State then pieced together another 6-0 run to pull within one as Klug buried a layup, 50-49, with 31 seconds to play in the quarter. U-Mary led after three, 50-49.
Both teams exchanged points in the fourth quarter until Minnesota State stole the lead late in the frame, 60-59, after freshman
Brooke Tonsfeldt netted a layup with 5:48 on the clock. U-Mary answered to lock the game at 63-63 by the 3:31 mark. The Marauders attempted to put the game out reach with a late Gabbie Bohl jumper to take a two point, 70-68, lead with nine seconds to play. Senior
Mackenzie Dahl responded for the Mavericks on the next possession with a game tying layup, 70-70, to send the game into overtime.

Claire Jordan knocked down a pair of critical free throws to lock the game at 78-78 with 1:29 remaining. U-Mary then capitalized on home court momentum with a 5-0 run to establish an 83-78 edge with 45 seconds remaining. Freshman
Kirstin Klitzke ended the run with a clutch triple and pulled the Mavericks back within three, 83-80, with 36 seconds to play. However, Minnesota State could not get any closer and went on to drop the contest, 90-84.
As a team, U-Mary held the advantage in rebounds (42-24) and assists (21-12). The Mavericks shot 48.5% from the field and 46.2% from three in comparison to the Marauders 51.6% from the field and 44.4% from downtown.
Klitzke posted a season-high and team-best 22 points on 9-of-10 shooting from the field and 2-of-3 from three. Klug reached double digits in scoring for the seventh time this season with 16 points while Jordan matched a career-best 16 points. Ziegler rounded out the top performers with 12 points and team-high seven rebounds.
Minnesota State will return to Taylor Center on Jan. 19 against Sioux Falls. Tip-of is set for 6:00 p.m.
