ABERDEEN, S.D. --- The Minnesota State volleyball team split at the Max & Erma's Classic after sweeping Minot State, 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-11), then stumbling against No. 23 Northern State, 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-20), Friday evening.
With today's results, Minnesota State moves to 4-2 overall on the season.
In match one, Minnesota State blanked Minot State, 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-11), and picked up its third sweep of the season. The Beavers took two quick points before the Mavericks got hot with a 6-1 run to create a 6-3 advantage. Minnesota State rode momentum pushing its lead to eight, 20-12, after a
Sydney Powell kill. The Mavericks went on to win the opening frame, 25-15.
In the second stanza, both teams traded points until Minnesota State was able to construct a four point cushion, 14-10, after
Micayla Porter set up
Morgan Olson for a kill forcing a Minot State timeout. Minnesota State stretched its advantage to five, 21-16, with the help of back-to-back kills from
Ashton Lee and
Jackie Jones. The Mavericks took the second set, 25-21, and took a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third and final frame, Minnesota State sprinted out a 9-2 edge after a Lee service ace. The Mavericks continued to apply pressure expanding their lead into the double-digits, 14-4, after a Porter service ace. Minnesota State went on to close out the set, 25-11, and the match, 3-0.
The Mavericks held the edge in kills (47-26) and assists (43-26) while the Beavers held the slight advantage in digs (38-36). Additionally, Minnesota State notched eight service aces as a team.
Powell set the pace with a match-high 13 kills while freshman
Alivia Garbe also reached double figures with 10 kills. Porter recorded a match-best 22 assists while junior
Autumn Risch handed out 18 assists of her own. Freshman
Mara Quam added nine digs to round out the top performers.
In match two, Minnesota State dropped a 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-20) decision to No. 23 Northern State. The Wolves started fast doubling up the Mavericks, 8-4, after a kill. Northern State continued to find offense stretching its advantage into 17-9 before Minnesota State burned a timeout. Northern State went on to take the first stanza, 25-15.
Minnesota State fought back in the second frame which saw seven ties. The Mavericks took a 7-3 advantage after a momentum swinging block from Olson. Northern State then stormed back to lock things up at 11. Later in the stanza, Minnesota State snatched a one point, 18-17, edge after Porter set up Powell for a kill. However, Northern State closed the set on an 8-4 run which proved to be the difference as the Mavericks fell, 25-21.
In the third and final set, both teams exchanged points to deadlock the frame at 13. Northern State began to take control establishing a three point advantage, 20-17. The Mavericks retaliated with two unanswered kills from Powell and Olson to make the score 20-19. The Wolves then used a 5-1 run to close out the set, 25-20, and the match, 3-0.
Northern State held the edge in kills (41-39), assists (41-39), and digs (56-53).
Risch recorded a team-best 18 assists while Porter also reached the double-digit plateau with 16. Three Mavericks reached double-digits in digs: Powell (12), Porter (10), and Quam (10). Janzig recorded a team-high nine kills.
Minnesota State returns to action tomorrow against South Dakota School of Mines at 10:00 a.m., and Minnesota Crookston at 2:30 p.m.
