ST. PAUL, Minn. --- Junior
Sydney Powell posted a match-high 16 kills and added 14 digs as the Mavericks upset bid of No. 2 Concordia-St. Paul fell short, 3-1 (25-22, 19-25, 22-25, 17-25), Tuesday night.
With the loss, Minnesota State drops to 6-5 overall and 0-3 NSIC. With the win, Concordia-St. Paul improves to 10-1 overall and 3-0 NSIC.
Both teams battled early as Minnesota State took its first lead of the night, 8-7, with the aid of an
Ashton Lee kill. Concordia-St. Paul clawed back to lock things at 15 after a long volley and kill from Brooklyn Lewis. The Golden Bears then stole the edge, 18-17, before the Mavericks went on a 5-0 run to establish their largest lead of the set, 22-18. Minnesota State went on to take the opening frame, 25-22.
The Mavericks took advantage of a Golden Bear attack error to steal an early 6-5 lead in the second set. Concordia-St. Paul then used a 4-0 run to capture a 9-6 advantage. Minnesota State fought back to deadlock the frame at 11 after a blistering service ace from
Micayla Porter. The Golden Bears then began to take control of the frame creating a three point, 18-15, lead forcing a Minnesota State timeout. CSP went on to even the match, 1-1, and win the set, 25-19.
After two sets, Minnesota State held the edge in digs (34-33) while Concordia-St. Paul held the slight advantage in kills (23-22) and assists (23-21).
In the third frame, the Mavericks took a one point, 11-10, lead after another service ace from Porter. However, the Golden Bears responded with seven unanswered points to pull away with a 17-11 edge. CSP then pushed its lead to 24-18 after a kill from Mariya Sampson. Minnesota State made a late push with a 4-0 run taking advantage of three attack errors and one kill from Powell to make the score 24-22. The Golden Bears then got the final point to take the set, 25-22, and steal the lead in the match, 2-1.
Set fourth and final set, Concordia-St. Paul jumped out to a quick 7-3 lead. The Golden Bears kept their foot on the gas increasing their lead to eight, 19-11, by the midway point. Minnesota State retaliated with a 3-0 run to pull within five, 19-14, following a
Megan Hulscher kill. The Mavericks could not get any closer and dropped the set, 25-17, and the match, 3-1.
Concordia-St. Paul held the edge in kills (53-42) and assists (51-41) while Minnesota State held the edge in digs (60-57) and blocks (10-6).
Powell led the Mavericks with a match-high 16 kills and added 14 digs with five blocks. Junior
Autumn Risch totaled a team-best 20 assists while Porter also reached double-digits in assists with 16. Freshman
Mara Quam rounded out the top performers with a match-best 15 digs.
Minnesota State returns to action on Friday when it hosts U-Mary on faculty night. First serve is set for 6:00 p.m.
