Emporia, Kan. --- No. 2-seeded Minnesota State lost to No. 3-seeded St. Cloud State 9-4 in the 2017 NCAA DII Central Region Baseball Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Trusler Sports Complex.
The Huskies (41-16) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a sac fly and RBI single, but junior left-hander
Brody Rodning (6-4), who started on the mound for the Mavericks (45-10), worked out of further trouble. However, St. Cloud State tacked on three more runs in the top of the third to take a 5-0 lead.
The Mavericks cut into the lead with their first run of the game in the bottom of the third to make the score 5-1. Junior first baseman
Dylan Dresel hit a triple down the right-field line that scored senior catcher
Hunter Harnisch.
Minnesota State pulled closer on an RBI ground-out off the bat of Dresel, which scored Harnisch from third, to make the score 5-2 in the bottom of the fifth. Freshman second baseman
Teddy Petersen had a key sacrifice bunt that set up the run.
After the Huskies extended their lead to 6-2 in the top of the eighth, junior shortstop
Luke Waldek cut the deficit in half with a two-run homer – his third of the season – in the bottom half of the frame for the Mavericks. Senior left fielder
Hunter Walsh scored on the play.
However, the Mavericks did not score again and the Huskies added on three more runs in the top of the ninth to make the final score 9-4.
Senior third baseman
Eric Peterson led the Mavericks with three hits and reached base four times.
Rodning (6-4), who was charged with the loss, allowed five runs – all earned – on six hits in four innings of work. He struck out three and walked four.
Dominic Austing (7-3) picked up the win for St. Cloud State. He held Minnesota State to two earned runs on seven hits over 6 2/3 innings. He struck out nine and walked two.
Minnesota State drops into the elimination bracket and will face eighth-seeded Arkansas-Monticello tonight. The start time is half an hour after the game between seventh-seeded Central Oklahoma and top-seeded Emporia State.
