St. Cloud, Minn. --- Junior right-hander Dalton Roach took a no-hit bid into the eighth inning, and became the all-time program leader for strikeouts in a single season, as top-seeded Minnesota State baseball routed eighth-seeded Minnesota Crookston in the opening round of the NSIC Tournament at Joe Faber Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Roach (9-1) was dominant on the mound for the Mavericks – holding Minnesota Crookston to one hit and two walks, while striking out 14 batters for the third time this season. The Golden Eagles did not get a hit until there was one out in the top of the eighth inning. In the process, Roach lowered his season ERA to 1.74 and he moved into first place on the Mavericks' all-time single-season strikeout list with 121. The previous program best of 113 was set by Jason Hoppe (2011-14).
The Mavericks offense provided Roach more than enough run support – pounding out 10 runs on 10 hits (nine different Mavericks tallied a hit) with the help of two Golden Eagle errors. The Mavericks hit three home runs. Senior third baseman Eric Peterson (8), junior first baseman Dylan Dresel (12) and sophomore right fielder Jordan Hart (10) each left the yard.
Peterson, who is the Mavericks' all-time leader in career runs scored with 220, scored twice on the day and drove in a game-high four runs.
Parker Hanson (4-4), who started for Minnesota Crookston was charged with the loss. He surrendered five runs – all earned – on four hits and three walks, while striking out three.
Minnesota State next faces Wayne State in the second round of the 2017 NSIC Baseball Tournament on Thursday at 3:30 p.m., in St. Cloud, Minn.
