CLERMONT, Fla. --- The Minnesota State softball team dispatched Lewis, 5-2, and Mercyhurst, 8-1, Sunday night at The Spring Games. The Mavericks have now won their last five games in a row.
In game one, Minnesota State edged Lewis, 5-2. Senior pitcher
Coley Ries (6-1) played all seven innings in the win including a season-high 19 strikeouts. Paige Fossey takes the loss after pitching 5.2 innings while giving up 10 hits.
The Mavericks jumped out to a quick 3-0 advantage in the first inning highlighted by
Amber Kral connecting on her fourth home run of the weekend and fifth of the season to make the game 3-0.
Following three scoreless innings, Lewis cut the deficit down to one, 3-2, after a two run RBI in the fourth inning. Minnesota State retaliated in the fifth inning with a Kral RBI single to second sending
Jess Meidl home, 4-2. The Mavericks then stretched the lead to 5-2 in the sixth inning following a
McKenzie Paap RBI single to center field allowing
Alyssa Rickels to score.
Minnesota State recorded ten hits as team while Lewis notched three hits.
In game two, the Mavericks downed Mercyhurst, 8-1. Junior
Libby Bemis earned her fifth win of the season (5-2) after tossing nine strikeouts over 6.1 innings. Anna Cochis picks up her second loss of the season while giving up five hits in 2.0 innings.
Minnesota State established a 2-0 lead in the first inning following runs from Paap and Meidl. The Mavericks added two more runs in the second stanza, 4-0, highlighted by
Carly Esselman scoring on a throwing error after stealing third base.
MSU continued the scoring into the third inning after a Kral RBI double to left field allowing
Ashley Thell to score, 5-0. Later in the inning,
Cori Kennedy added a RBI single to send
Dana Mogren home, 6-0
The Lakers spoiled the shutout in the fourth inning after a hair out at third base to make the score, 6-1. However, Minnesota State went on to close out the game and pick up the 8-1 win.
Three Mavericks posted multiple hits: Paap (4), Meidl (2), and Kennedy (2).
Following today's games, Minnesota State moves to 11-3 overall on the season. The Mavericks return to the diamond tomorrow against Georgian Court at 5:00 p.m., and Wilmington at 7:30 p.m.
