CLERMONT, Fla. --- The Minnesota State softball team topped Urbana, 15-0, and #13 Southern Indiana, 2-1, at The Spring Games Saturday afternoon.
In game one, the Mavericks cruised past Urbana, 15-0, in five innings. Junior pitcher
Libby Bemis picked up her fourth win of the season (4-2) after throwing seven strikeouts over 3.2 innings pitched. Carly Allen takes the loss after pitching five innings while giving up 15 hits.
Minnesota State started hot on offense with two home runs in the first inning from
Jess Meidl and
Amber Kral to make the score 2-0. The Mavericks increased the advantage to 8-0 in the second stanza after Kral connected on a three run RBI home run to center field sending Meidl and
Ashley Thell home.
Minnesota State stretched its lead into double digits, 10-0, in the third inning after
McKenzie Paap scored an unearned run following a wild pitch. The offensive explosion continued in the fourth inning as Kral hit her third home run of the day --fifth of the season-- on a two run RBI to make the score 12-0. Kral is only Maverick dating back to 2003 to hit three home runs in a game. The last player to hit two home runs in a game was Lindsay Erickson against Concordia -St. Paul on March 26, 2014.
Minnesota State added three more runs in the fifth inning and went on to win the contest, 15-0.

In game two, the Mavericks edged #13 Southern Indiana, 2-1. Senior pitcher
Coley Ries tossed her fifth win of the season (5-1) after seven innings with a season-high 14 strikeouts. Courtney Atkisson picked up the loss after pitching 1.1 innings and giving up three hits with one strikeout.
Minnesota State got the scoring started in the first inning following a
Dana Mogren walk which allowed Paap to score an unearned run, 1-0. Later in the inning,
Meidl added the second run of the game, 2-0, after a
Carly Esselman walk.
Following six scoreless innings, Southern Indiana cut the score in half, 2-1, after a single up middle in the seventh inning. However, the Mavericks went on to close out the game and earn the 2-1 win which is the second victory this season over a top 25 opponent.
Minnesota State posted seven hits as a team while Southern Indiana registered three hits.
Following today's games, the Mavericks move to 9-3 overall on the season. Minnesota State returns to the diamond tomorrow against Lewis at 5:00 p.m., and Mercyhurst at 7:30 p.m.
