Mavericks Roll Past Huskies at Taylor Center, 83-55

Karina Schroeder records her second straight double-double.

MANKATO, Minn. ---  The Minnesota State women's basketball team rolled past St. Cloud State, 83-55, Saturday afternoon at Taylor Center. 

With the victory, the Mavericks improve to 13-9 on the season, and a 9-9 NSIC record. With the loss, St. Cloud State falls to 9-13, including a 7-11 NSIC record.

Minnesota State got the offense going early as Logan Anderson converted on a three point play, and put the Mavericks up 16-6 with 3:11 left in the first. Britney Scherber hit a jumper late in the quarter, and the Mavericks led 23-12 after one quarter of play. The Mavericks outscored the Huskies in the paint 10-2, and had nine points off turnovers. 

The Minnesota State offense was much of the same, as its lead grew into the double digits, 35-15, after Monica Muth hit a jump shot at the 3:27 mark. The Mavericks had three players with at least eight points in the half, and led 41-20 going into the locker room. Minnesota State finished the half shooting 44.1% (15-34) from the field, and 36.4% (4-11) from behind the arc. St. Cloud State finished the half shooting just 17.2% (5-29) in the half and converted on just one three point attempt. 

The Mavericks stretched its halftime lead to twenty-five in no time after Karina Schroeder went to the line and sank two free throws, giving the Mavericks a 52-27 lead. Later in the quarter, Schroeder grabbed her tenth rebound of the contest, giving her a double-double in back-to-back games. Scherber continued her hot night from the floor after hitting two three-pointers in the quarter, and helped the Mavericks expand the lead to 67-41 after three quarters. 

The name of the game for Minnesota State in the fourth quarter was to be patient on offense and look for the open shot. Lexi Schoper added two more points for the Mavericks bench after driving baseline and converting on a layup with 2:05 remaining. Minnesota State went on to close out the remaining time and earn the 83-55 victory. 

Minnesota State shot 43.5% (30-69) from the field, 75.0% (15-20) from the free throw line. St. Cloud State finished the game shooting 28.2% (20-71) from the field, and 16.0% (4-25) from three point land. The Mavericks also held the edge in rebounds, 55-41, and assists, 15-7. 

Schroeder finished the game with her third double-double of the season with 17 points and a team-best 12 rebounds. Scherber netted with a game-high 21 points for the Mavericks. Junior Claire Ziegler also reached double digits in scoring with 14 points and contributed six rebounds to round out the top performers. 

The Mavericks will return to action Feb. 10 at Upper Iowa. Tip-off set for 6:00 p.m.
