Mankato, Minn. --- Minnesota State women's hockey was shut out 5-0 by No. 4 Minnesota in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game on Friday night at Verizon Wireless Center.
Senior goaltender Brianna Quade (3-15-2) made 29 saves for Minnesota State (6-21-3, 3-18-2-0 WCHA), but Minnesota (20-15-3, 16-4-3-2), which scored quickly in the first period, proceeded to score five unanswered goals in the first 40:00 of play and cruised to the 5-0 win.
The Golden Gophers, who scored two goals in the first and three in the second, received goals from five different players. The game-winning goal was scored by sophomore Sophie Skarzynski (2-2--4) at 2:05 of the first period. Senior forward Kate Schipper (9-12--21), junior forward Kelly Pannek (15-39--54) and sophomore forward Sarah Potomak (16-26--42) each had one goal and two assists to tie for the game high in points (3).
Minnesota State blocked 22 shots, which tied for its second-highest blocked shot total of the season. Senior defenseman Anna Fiegert (1-2--3) led the team with four blocked shots, while junior defenseman Anna Keys (2-5--7) – the team leader with 62 blocked shots in 2016-17 – and freshman forward Demi Gardner (2-0--2) recorded three blocked shots each. Gardner's three blocked shots are a career-high.
There were three power plays total in the game. The Mavericks finished 0-of-2 on the power play, while the Golden Gophers scored on their only power play attempt.
Junior goaltender Sidney Peters (19-5-2) made nine saves through the first two periods for the Golden Gophers and was the goalie of record. Freshman netminder Serena D'Angelo played the third period in net for the Golden Gophers – stooping all three shots she faced.
The Mavericks and Golden Gophers return to the ice for their final meeting of the 2016-17 regular season on Saturday at 3:07 p.m. The Mavericks will be honoring their seniors in an on-ice Senior Day ceremony following the game at Verizon Wireless Center.
