WINONA, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's basketball team came up short against Winona State, 80-52, Friday evening at McCown Gymnasium.
Minnesota State (1-7, 0-3 NSIC) got things started with an 8-2 run out of the gates highlighted by a
Logan Anderson triple. The Mavericks continued to apply pressure after
Ashley Reed connected on a layup, 11-5, at the 5:20 mark. Winona State (7-1, 3-1 NSIC) retaliated with an 8-0 run to steal its first lead of the night, 13-11, with 3:29 to play in the quarter. Minnesota State trailed after the opening frame, 20-15.
Winona State rode momentum into the second quarter with a 9-2 run connecting on a three on each of its first three possessions to make the score 29-17.
Taylor Drost ended the run for the Mavericks as
Taylor Klug found her on the perimeter for the triple, 29-20, at the 7:05 mark. However, Minnesota State trailed at the intermission, 39-26.
Anderson paced the Mavericks in the first half with a team-high six points and two rebounds. Drost chipped in five points while Reed collected a team-best four rebounds.
Winona State began to pull away in the third stanza with a 12-3 run to force a Minnesota State timeout at the 5:36 mark. The Warriors then stretched their lead to 63-32 after a Taylor Hustad layup. The Mavericks generated some offense with a 6-0 run highlighted by a
Kirstin Klitzke three pointer to make the score 63-48 with 1:30 on the clock. Winona State led after three quarters, 65-38.
Minnesota State opened the final frame scoring on its first two possessions with buckets from
Mackenzie Dahl and Klug to make the score 67-42. The Warriors once again were able to put together a 7-0 run to open their largest lead of the game, 74-42, with 6:58 remaining. The Mavericks could not get any closer and went on to fall, 80-52.
As a team, Winona State held the edge in rebounds (39-23) and assists (15-11). The Maverick bench contributed 28 points in comparison to the Warriors 22.
Klitzke paced the Mavericks with a team-high nine points and two rebounds. Jordan contributed eight points with one block while Reed rounded out the top performers with a team-best six rebounds and six points.
The Mavericks will return to action tomorrow at Upper Iowa. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m.
