MANKATO, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's basketball team suffered a 73-49 setback to No. 19 Northern State Sunday afternoon at Taylor Center.
The Wolves (11-2, 7-1 NSIC) got things started opening up a 7-1 advantage by the 8:10 mark of the opening frame. The Mavericks (4-9, 2-5 NSIC) responded with a 10-3 run highlighted by two Mackenzie Dahl triples to pull within one, 12-11, with 6:05 on the clock. Northern State answered with an 11-5 run of its own to push the lead back into double figures, 26-16, with 1:29 to play in the quarter. The Wolves held the edge after the first frame, 26-16.
Minnesota State battled back in the second quarter outscoring Northern State, 14-9. The frame was highlighted by a 7-0 Maverick hot streak to chip the Wolves edge down to five, 32-27, with 2:16 to play in the half. Claire Ziegler contributed four points to the run while Claire Jordan netted a momentum swinging three pointer. However, Northern State led at the intermission, 35-30.
Dahl and Ziegler paced Minnesota State with seven points each. Northern State held the edge in rebounds (22-15) and assists (9-5). Both teams shot 50.0% from downtown in the first half.
Logan Anderson provided a spark to start the third quarter after creating a steal and running the length of the floor a layup to make the score 35-32. The Wolves then pushed their lead up to seven, 42-35, following a layup from Brianna Kusler at the 6:09 mark. The Mavericks responded with four unanswered points made up of a Anderson three pointer and Dahl free throw to make the score 42-39. Northern State finished the quarter on a 12-3 run to take a 54-42 lead into the final frame.
In the final quarter, the Mavericks quickly cut the deficit back down to 10, 54-44, after Ziegler found Monica Muth in the paint for a layup. Northern State responded to assemble a 14-4 run to put the game out for reach, 68-48, with 2:14 remaining. The Wolves closed out the remaining time to pick up the win over the Mavericks, 72-49.
As a team, Northern State held the advantage in rebounds (44-26) and assists (19-9). The Wolves shot 47.4% from the field in comparison to the Mavericks 33.3%.
Anderson led Minnesota State with a team-best 12 points with two steals. Dahl contributed eight points to go along with four rebounds. Ziegler rounded out the top performers with seven points, six rebounds and one assist.
Minnesota State returns to action on Jan. 5 at Augustana. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
