Minnesota State Looks to Stay Hot Hosting MSU Moorhead & #19 Northern State

MANKATO, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's basketball team continues its homestand against MSU Moorhead on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. The Mavericks will then wrap up the weekend on Sunday hosting No. 19 Northern State. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. 

Mavericks at a Glance: Minnesota State (4-7, 2-3 NSIC) enters the week riding a three-game win streak. Most recently, the Mavericks topped Palm Beach Atlantic, 69-52, at Taylor Center. 

Impact Mavericks: Senior Claire Ziegler fuels Minnesota State with a team-best 10.5 points per game. Senior Logan Anderson has started the last eight contests and is contributing 9.5 points while distributing a team-high 2.2 assists per game. Junior Monica Muth is snatching 5.2 rebounds and netting 7.3 points per contest.    

Stat Pack: As a team this season, Minnesota State is posting 63.8 points per game in comparison to its opponents' 69.6. The Mavericks are also pulling down 40.2 rebounds per game and passing out 9.8 assists per contest. 

Heating Up: Minnesota State enters the week riding a three-game win streak with wins over Upper Iowa, Concordia-St. Paul and Palm Beach Atlantic. Over that stretch, the Mavericks averaged 71.3 points per game in comparison to their opponents 53. 

Suffocating Defense: Last week, Minnesota State held Concordia-St. Paul to a season-low 45 points. That was the first time the Mavericks limited a team to under 50 points since holding Upper Iowa to 48 points on Feb. 10, 2017. Additionally, MSU also restricted Palm Beach Atlantic to the second lowest point total of the season with 52 last week. 

Double-Double Round Two: Junior Monica Muth registered her second double-double of the season in the win over Palm Beach Atlantic last week. The guard netted a season-high 13 points and pulled down a season-best 11 rebounds. She also shot 62.5% from the field. 

Controlling the Boards: Minnesota State is ranked fifth in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) with 40.2 rebounds per contest. The Mavericks lead the NSIC in offensive rebounds with 14.1 per game. Minnesota State pulled down a season-high 53 rebounds against Palm Beach Atlantic and Chaminade. 

Off the Bench: Freshman Kirstin Klitzke is averaging 5.7 points off the bench this season. The Montrose, Minn., native has reached double digits in scoring in three of the last five games including a game-high and season-best 15 points against Concordia-St. Paul. 

Facing the Top-25: The Mavericks encounter with No. 19 Northern State will be its first game against a top-25 opponent this season. 

Chasing the 800-point/500 Rebound Club: Senior Claire Ziegler is looking to become the 14th member of the MSU 800-point/500 rebound club. She currently sits  at  765 points and 481 rebounds over 77 career games. 

100th Win Watch: Head Coach Emilee Thiesse has totaled 99 career wins with an overall career record of 99-58 (74-41 NSIC). She has led the Mavericks to two NCAA postseason appearances and boasts a 55-19 (.743) record at Taylor Center. 

Scouting MSU Moorhead: MSU Moorhead is located in Moorhead, Minn., and enters the week with a 7-3 (4-2 NSIC) record. Most recently, the Dragons outlasted Northern State, 64-61, in overtime. MSU Moorhead is led by Karla Nelson who is in her 18th season. 

As a team, MSU Moorhead is totaling 70.3 points per contest in comparison to its opponents' 60.4. The Dragons are also collecting 42.8 rebounds and passing out 15.3 assists per game. 

The last time these two teams met last season, MSU Moorhead downed Minnesota State, 66-58. However, the Mavericks hold the edge in the all-time series, 26-15. 

Scouting #19 Northern State: Northern State (9-2, 5-1 NSIC) enters the week slotted No. 19 in the latest WBCA Coaches Poll. Most recently, the Wolves came up short at MSU Moorhead, 64-61, in overtime. Northern State is led by Curt Fredrickson who is in his 38th season. 

As a unit, Northern State is netting 74.1 points per game in comparison to its opponents' 61.9. The Wolves are puling down a NSIC leading 45.4 rebounds and handing out 16.9 assists per contest. 

In their most recent encounter, Northern State topped Minnesota State, 62-47, last season in Aberdeen, S.D. The Wolves have won the last six meetings and hold the slight edge in the all-time series, 10-9.

Looking Ahead: Minnesota State will travel to No. 14 Augustana on Jan. 5. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
