MANKATO, Minn. – Junior
Monica Muth registered her second double-double of the season as Minnesota State pushed its win streak to three games downing Palm Beach Atlantic, 69-52, Tuesday afternoon at Taylor Center.
The Mavericks (4-7, 2-3 NSIC) jumped out to an early 6-0 lead following a
Claire Jordan jumper. Minnesota State continued to build momentum stretching its edge to nine, 14-5, after Jordan created a steal leading to a
Taylor Klug layup at the 3:50 mark. The Mavericks led after the opening frame, 18-10.
Logan Anderson and Klug fueled Minnesota State with five points each.
MSU opened the second quarter with back-to-back triples from Klug and Muth to increase the edge into double figures, 24-10, with 8:46 on the clock. Later in the frame, the Maverick offense put together a 5-0 run which consisted of two Anderson jumpers and a free throw to make the score 35-16. Minnesota State took a 38-21 advantage into the locker room at the break.
At the half, Anderson led Mavericks in scoring with 13 points, two assists and a steal. The Minnesota State out rebounded the Sailfish, 23-20, and shot 43.2% from the field.
Palm Beach Atlantic (1-10, 0-5 SCC) raised the defensive pressure in the third quarter making it difficult for Minnesota State to find clean scoring chances and limited Minnesota State to only 13 points. However, the Mavericks stretched their advantage to 20, 41-21, as
Ashley Reed netted a jumper with 7:29 on the clock. A few possessions later Minnesota State opened up its largest lead of the game, 46-22, as Klug buried a triple at the 5:10 mark. The Mavericks led after three quarters, 51-33.
In the final quarter, the Sailfish attempted to make a late surge with a 7-0 run after a pair of Hannah Grim free throws to make the score 60-46. Minnesota State retaliated to stretch its lead back up to 18, 65-47, after a couple of Jordan free throws with 2:24 remaining. The Mavericks went on to close out the remaining time to earn the victory, 69-52.
As a team, Minnesota State matched a season-high 53 rebounds in comparison to Palm Beach Atlantics 40. The Mavericks shot 37.5% from the field while the Sailfish shot 26.7%.
Muth posted her second double-double of the season with 13 points and game-high 11 rebounds. She also shot 62.5% from the field. Anderson netted a game-best 15 points while Jordan added 12 points and six rebounds. Klug rounded out the top performers matching a season-best 12 points.
Minnesota State returns to action on Dec. 30 hosting MSU Moorhead. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m.
