Mavericks Suffer 6-1 Setback to No. 6 Golden Gophers

Mankato, Minn. --- Minnesota State women's hockey lost the first game of its two-game Western Collegiate Hockey Association series with No. 6 Minnesota, 6-1, on Friday night at Verizon Center.
 
After a scoreless first period between Minnesota State (2-6-1, 1-4-0-0 WCHA) and Minnesota (6-4-1, 5-3-1-0 WCHA), Minnesota scored four second-period goals to take a 4-0 lead into the second intermission. The first two goals of the period were scored within two minutes of each other. Grace Zumwinkle, who tallied one goal and three assists to lead all skaters with four points, scored the first goal at 1:22 of the period. Cara Piazza, who had one goal and two assists for three points on the night, scored the next goal at the 3:16 mark. The next two Gopher goals were scored on the power play. Sydney Baldwin and Nicole Schammel scored at 6:08 and 12:45, respectively.   
 
In the third period, the Gophers extended their lead to 5-0 on a goal by Sierra Smith at 5:39. Junior forward Corbin Boyd scored the Mavericks' lone goal of the evening at 17:45 of the third period. Senior forward Sara Bustad and senior defenseman Emma Wittchow assisted on the play. Kippin Keller capped off the scoring with a goal for the Gophers at 17:56, which made the final score 6-1.
 
Sophomore Chloe Crosby (1-2-1) made 31 saves in goal for the Mavericks and Sidney Peters(4-3-0) stopped 23 shots for the Gophers.       
 
The Mavericks were outshot 37-24 in the game. 
 
The Mavericks finished 0-of-5 on the power play and the Gophers went 2-of-5 with the man advantage. 
 
Minnesota State and Minnesota conclude their two-game WCHA series with a game at 3:07 p.m., on Saturday at Verizon Center.
