HONOLULU, Hawaii --- The Minnesota State women's basketball team downed Chaminade, 82-62, at the Oahu Thanksgiving Classic on Thursday afternoon.
Following a Chaminade (0-1) layup to start the scoring, Minnesota State (1-4) rattled off 19 unanswered points.
Brooke Tonsfeldt capped the run to put the Mavericks out in front, 19-2, as she netted a free throw at the 4:27 mark. Minnesota State led after the first quarter, 27-13. The Mavericks shot 55% from the field in the opening frame and
Taylor Drost contributed a team-best six points.
Monica Muth and
Claire Jordan also chipped in five points each.
The Silverswords began the second quarter with a 6-0 run to pull back within eight, 27-19.
Logan Anderson ended the run burying a triple, 30-19, with 6:45 on the clock. Minnesota State then pushed its lead back into double figures, 41-29, as
Mackenzie Dahl handed out her third assist of the half finding
Claire Ziegler for the layup at the 3:01 mark. The Mavericks led at the halfway point, 42-33.
At the intermission, Minnesota State held the edge in rebounds, 26-15, and assists, 10-3. The Mavericks shot 50.0% from the field in comparison to the Silverswords 32.2%. Anderson and Dahl paced Minnesota State with seven first half points each.
MSU opened the second half with a 5-1 run highlighted by a Drost triple to make the score 47-34 with 8:48 on the clock. Minnesota State continued to ride an offensive rhythm increasing its lead to 17, 60-43, after
Kirstin Klitzke found the bottom of the net on a three at the 3:20 mark. The Mavericks held the advantage after three, 64-49.
Minnesota State started final quarter with a 8-0 run as Tonsfeldt connected on a layup to make the score 72-49. The Mavericks then went on to open their largest lead of the game, 74-51, after a Jordan layup with 5:30 remaining. Minnesota State closed out the remaining time and earned the 82-62 win.
As a team, the Mavericks held the edge in rebounds, 53-28, and assists, 17-7. Minnesota State shot 48.4% from the field in comparison to Chaminade's 33.8%. The Maverick bench also contributed 26 points.
Drost matched a career-best 14 points to go along with seven rebounds and two assists. Muth posted a double-double with a season-high 11 points and 10 rebounds. Anderson contributed 12 points and collected six rebounds while Ziegler rounded out the top performers with 10 points.
Minnesota State returns to Taylor Center to open up NSIC play hosting Wayne State on Dec. 1. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
