Minnesota State Comes Up Short Against Black Hills State, 67-44

Anderson nets career-best 15 points.

MANKATO, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's basketball team came up short against Black Hills State, 67-44, Tuesday evening at Taylor Center. 

With the win, Black Hills State improves to 3–0 on the season. With the loss, Minnesota State falls to 0-3 overall on the season.  

After struggling to find the bottom of the net in the opening minutes, the Mavericks launched a 10-2 run to take a 10-6 lead with 5:15 remaining in the first quarter after subbing Logan Anderson into the game to find an offensive spark. Neither team was able to pull away in the opening frame which ended deadlocked at 14. 

Minnesota State opened the second frame on a 6-3 run to make the score 20-17 by the 7:13 mark.Taylor Klug started the run after Anderson found her cutting to the basket for the layup. Following a series of defensive stops from both teams, the Mavericks pushed their lead to 25-21 lead with 4:58 remaining in the first half after Anderson buried a triple. Minnesota State led at the intermission, 29-28. 

The Mavericks held the edge in rebounds, 19-17, and steals, 7-3. Minnesota State shot 42.9% from the field in comparison to Black Hills State's 39.3%. 

Following a Yellow Jacket layup to open the second half,Taylor Drost delivered a triple from the top the key igniting a 7-0 run to increase the Mavericks lead to six, 36-30, by the 8:09 mark. Black Hills State battled back to steal the lead, 42-40, with a Julia Seamans three pointer with 49 seconds on the clock. Minnesota State trailed after three, 42-40. 

The Mavericks struggled in the fourth quarter turning the ball over on their first five possessions allowing the Yellow Jackets to stretch their lead into double digits, 51-40, by the 6:58 mark. Following a timeout, Anderson tried to steal momentum back to the Mavericks as she connected on a jumper, 51-40, with 6:58 remaining. However, Minnesota State could not get any closer and went on to drop the contest, 67-44. 

As a team, Black Hills State held the advantage in rebounds (38-44), assists (14-8), and steals (11-9). The Yellow Jackets shot 42.6% from the field in comparison to the Mavericks 33.3%. 

Anderson paced Minnesota State with a team-best and career-high 15 points to go along with two assists and one steal. Drost contributed eight points while senior Claire Ziegler added a five rebounds. 

The Mavericks return to action on the road against Hawaii Pacific on Nov. 22 in Honolulu, HI. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m. (CST)\
