Mankato, Minn. --- Second-seeded Minnesota State soccer played sixth-seeded Southwestern Oklahoma State to a 1-1 draw in the second round of the 2017 NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship on Sunday afternoon at The Pitch, but fell 4-2 in a shootout to end its season.
Minnesota State (17-2-3) scored the only goal of the first 45:00 to take a 1-0 lead into halftime. Senior midfielder
Jenny Hoerter played a through ball to senior forward
Morgan Cottew, who had timed her run and gotten behind the Southwestern Oklahoma State (13-3-5) defenders. Cottew deposited the ball into the back of the net in the 27th minute for her sixth goal of the season, and Hoerter was credited with her team-leading ninth assist.
However, the one-goal lead proved to not be enough as Southwestern Oklahoma State scored the lone goal of the second half to tie the game and force overtime.
Ashlyn Collier scored her second goal of the season for the Bulldogs in the 58th minute.
Erica Brunet assisted on the play.
After regulation ended with the score 1-1, the teams played two overtime periods and neither team was able to score, which forced a shootout.
In the shootout, the Mavericks converted 2-of-4 attempts and the Bulldogs made all four of their shots. Hoerter and Cottew were successful on their attempts for the Mavericks, but it wasn't enough as the Mavericks' season came to an end.
Minnesota State held an 18-11 edge in shots, but shots on goal were tied at 4-4.
The Mavericks' senior goalkeeper
Taylor Livermore (10-1-2) and the Bulldogs'
Lexi Bates (9-3-5) each made three saves in goal.
In 2017, the Mavericks won both the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference regular season and postseason championships. Minnesota State has claimed five NSIC regular season titles and six NSIC Tournament championships. The Mavericks made their seventh consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and their 12th overall.
