Houghton, Mich. --- Michigan Tech used two second-period goals, scored less than 90 seconds apart, to kick start a 4-0 win over 20
th-rated Minnesota State in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game played Saturday in Houghton, Mich.
After a scoreless opening twenty minutes of action, Michigan Tech scored twice, with the goals coming just 1:17 apart in the middle stanza, giving the host Huskies a 2-0 lead after forty minutes of play.
Alex Gillies tallied a power play marker taking a pass from
Gavin Gould prior to putting the puck in the net at 6:11. Defenseman
Mitch Reinke's hard wrist shot from 40 feet out that a screened
Aaron Nelson had no chance on at 7:48. The Mavericks generated a couple of good scoring opportunities last in the middle frame, one by
C.J. Franklin and another by
Marc Michaelis, but both shots were turned aside by Tech netminder
Angus Redmond.
Gillies wired a shot past Nelson at 4:57 of the third for his second goal of the game in making it a 3-0 Tech lead and Chris Gerrie's empty netter at 16:38 sealed the win for the Huskies.
Nelson, who made his sixth consecutive start for the Mavericks, stopped 27 shots and now stands 3-2-1 for the year.
The 4-0 loss marks the third time this year Minnesota State has been shut-out.
Now 14-9-3 overall and 10-7-3 WCHA for the season, the Mavericks return to Mankato for a home league series at Verizon Center next Friday and Saturday versus Lake Superior State.
