Mavericks Fall in Five Sets at Minnesota Crookston

Box Score Crookston, Minn.---  Minnesota State fell to Minnesota Crookston, 3-2 (25-22, 27-29, 23-25, 28-26, 9-15), Saturday afternoon at Lysaker Gymnasium in front of 678 fans.

Both teams exchanged points early in set one to lock the frame at 10. The teams continued to battle until the Mavericks were able to create a 21-17 cushion. Minnesota State would hold off a late Minnesota Crookston push and close out the set after a Morgan Olson kill, 25-22.

The teams continued to fight into the second frame to find themselves deadlocked at 12. Later in the set, Minnesota State built a 24-21 advantage but the Golden Eagles responded with three unanswered points to tie the game at 24. Minnesota Crookston was able to seal the set with back-to-back serve aces from Maggie Perrel to win the frame, 29-27.

The Mavericks got off to fast start in the third set with a quick 9-3 edge and forcing the Golden Eagles into an early time out. Minnesota Crookston clawed their way back to cut the deficit down to two, 11-9. Later in the frame, the teams exchanged points until a Krista Hassing kill tied the set at 20.  The Golden Eagles went on to close out the set, 25-23.

In the fourth set, Minnesota State jumped out to a 7-4 lead to open the frame. Later in the set, the Mavericks grew their lead to 21-17 after a Minnesota Crookston attack error. The Golden Eagles then came storming back to once again tie the set at 26. The Mavericks responded by closing out the frame after a Minnesota Crookston attack error and Sydney Powell kill to win the set, 28-26.

In the fifth and final set, the Mavericks opened up an early 4-3 edge. The Golden Eagles then answered with a 7-2 run to seize control of the set, 10-6. Minnesota Crookston went on to win the set, 15-9, and the match, 3-2.

Senior Haley Fogarty led the Mavericks with a match-best 28 digs while senior Rissi McNallan added a season-high 18 digs. Hassing contributed a team-high 18 kills and sophomore Autumn Risch notched a team-best 37 assists.

Minnesota Crookston held the edge in kills (64-53), digs (82-73) and assists (60-47).

With the loss, Minnesota State moves to 8-5 (2-3 NSIC) on the season. The Mavericks will return to the Taylor Center Sept. 30 to take on St. Cloud State at 7:00 p.m.
