Mavericks Downed by No. 1 Concordia-St. Paul

Box Score Mankato, Minn.  --- Minnesota State fell to No. 1 Concordia-St. Paul, 3-1(20-25, 25-21, 10-25,10-25), Tuesday evening at the Taylor Center in front of 283 fans. 

Minnesota State opened the match building a 6-2 lead following a Krista Hassing ace. The Mavericks continued to grow their lead to 18-15 after a block by Hassing and Jackie Jones Concordia-St. Paul battled back to take their first lead of the contest, 20-19, and forcing a Maverick time out. The Golden Bears did not look back and closed out the set, 25-20.  

Both teams continued to fight into the second frame finding themselves deadlocked at 8. The Mavericks then went on a 8-0 run highlighted by a Sydney Powell block to create a 16-8 advantage. Later in the set, the Golden Bears cut the deficit down to three, 23-20. Minnesota State held off the late Concordia-St. Paul push to close out the set, 25-21.

In the third set, the Golden Bears sprinted out to a quick 10-4 lead and forced the Mavericks to burn a early time out. Concordia-St. Paul continued to grow their lead up to 14-4 and force Minnesota State into their second time out of the frame. The Golden Bears went on to win the frame, 25-10. 

In the fourth and final set, Concordia-St. Paul created a early 9-3 edge before Minnesota  State used a time out. The Golden Bears then went on a 8-2 run to seize control of the frame,17-5. Concordia-St. Paul went on to close out the frame, 25-10, and the match, 3-1. 

Hassing led the Mavericks with a team-high 12 kills while sophomoreAutumn Risch contributed a team-best 27 assists. Senior Haley Fogarty and Jones both added 11 digs to round out the Maverick top performers. 

Concordia-St. Paul held the edge in kills (52-30), assists (50-28), and digs (55-40). 

With the loss, Minnesota State moves to 7-4 (1-2 NSIC) on the season. The Mavericks will travel to Bemidiji State on Friday, Sept. 20 to take on the Beavers at 7:00 p.m.
