Mavericks Set to Host No. 1 Concordia-St. Paul to Start Week

Mankato, Minn. --- The Minnesota State University volleyball team will host No. 1 Concordia-St. Paul Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. The Mavericks will then travel to Bemidji State on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and wrap up the weekend at  Minnesota Crookston on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.

Mavericks at a Glance: Minnesota State enters the week with a 7-3 overall record and 1-1 record in the Northern Sun Collegiate Conference (NSIC). In their most recent match, the Mavericks downed Upper Iowa, 3-0, at the Taylor Center.

By the Numbers: As a team this season, Minnesota State is averaging 13.1 kills per set to its opponents 11.5. The Mavericks are also notching 12.3 assists and 16.6 digs per set. Additionally, Minnesota State adds 41 aces in comparison to their opponents 36 and 66.5 blocks to the competitions 41.

Climbing the Ranks: Three weeks into the season, Minnesota State is continuing to recieve votes in this week's AVCA Coaches Poll. The Mavericks sit on the outside of the top-25 but claimed 12 votes. Concordia-St. Paul remains in the top spot with 48 frist place votes.  

Impact Mavericks: Senior Haley Fogarty leads the Mavericks with a team-high 5.58 digs per set which ranks her third in the NSIC. Senior Krista Hassing contributes a team-best 3.83 kills per set while Sophomore Autumn Risch adds 10.44 assists per set. Senior Rissi McNallan rounds out the top performers with at team-high 10 aces. 

Milestone Watch: Senior Haley Fogarty will look to become the all-time Maverick dig leader and is slotted in second place with 1,522 career digs. Forgarty lies 101 digs outside of the top slot which is currently held by Jen Jacobs with 1,623 career digs. 

Scouting Concordia-St. Paul: Concordia St. Paul is located in St. Paul, Minn., and has an overall record of 10-0 and a 2-0 conference record. The Golden Bears are members of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC). In their most recent match, Concordia-St. Paul swept No. 8 Winona State, 3-0, in St. Paul, Minn.  The Golden Bears remain the No. 1 ranked team in this week's AVCA Coaches poll and have held that spot the entire season. Concordia-St. Paul is led by Brady Starkey, who is in his 14th season. 

The last time these two schools met was in the 2015 NSIC Tournament, the Golden Bears won the match in five sets, 3-2, at St. Paul, Minn. Concordia-St. Paul leads the all-time series, 20-4, and have won the last two meetings. The last time Minnesota State defeated the Golden Bears was a 3-1 victory in the 2014 season. 

Through the first 10 matches of the season, Concordia-St. Paul leads the NSIC in hitting percentage (.343), assists per set (14.84), and kills per set (15.90). The Golden Bears add 17.58 digs per set and 2.24 blocks per set. 

Concordia-St. Paul is led by senior Riley Hanson who currently averages 3.52 kills per set which ranks second in the NSIC. Senior Kasey Williams leads the Golden Bears with a conference-best 13.32 assists per set while senior Emily McDonough adds a team-best 4.42 digs per set. 

Scouting Bemidji State: Bemidji State is located in Bemidji, Minn., and has an overall record of 5-5 and 1-1 conference record. The Beavers are members of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC). The Beavers enter the week coming off a 3-0 loss at Minnesota Duluth. Bemidji State is led by first year head coach Kevin Ulmer. 

The last time these two schools squared off during the 2015 season, the Mavericks fell to the Beavers in five sets, 3-2, in Bemidji, Minn. Minnesota State leads the all-time series 33-18.

Through the first 10 matches of the season, Bemidiji State is posting 11.8 kills per set and 10.6 assists per set. The Beavers also add 13.0 digs per set and 1.9 blocks per set. 

Bemidji State is led by senior Jessica Yost who is posting a team-best 4.08 kills per set while freshman Shelby Haney notches a team-high 5.19 assists per set. Senior Amanda Tronick rounds out the Beavers top performers with 2.65 digs per set. 

Scouting Minnesota Crookston: Minnesota Crookston is located in Crookston, Minn., and has an overall record of 4-6 and 0-2 conference record. The Golden Eagles are members of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC). Minnesota Crookston  enters the week on a two match losing streak with its most recent defeat coming against St. Cloud State, 3-0, in St. Cloud, Minn. The Golden Eagles are led by Lee Anderson, who is in his ninth season at the helm. 

The last time these two schools met during the 2015 season, Minnesota State swept the Golden Eagles, 3-0, at the Taylor Center. The Mavericks lead the all-time series, 12-4. 

Through the first 10 games of the season, Minnesota Crookston leads the NSIC in service aces with 73 (2.15 per set). The Golden Eagles are posting 11.6 kills per set and 10.6 assists per set. Minnesota Crookston adds 14.1 digs per set and 1.5 blocks per set. 

Minnesota Crookston is led by junior Maggie Perrel who is notching a team-best 2.88 kills per set while senior Sierra Trost contributes 8.88 assists per set. Freshman Ali Schueler adds at team-high 4.75 digs per set. 

Looking Ahead: Minnesota State will travel to Bemidji State on Sept. 23 at 7:00 p.m., before closing out the road trip against Minnesota Crookston on Sept. 24 with first serve set for 4:00 p.m.
