Box Score Mankato, Minn. --- Minnesota State swept Upper Iowa, 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-16) Saturday afternoon at the Taylor Center in the first home action of the season.
In the opening set, the Mavericks began to take control early opening up a 13-7 edge and forcing Upper Iowa to use a time out. Following the time out, Minnesota State went on a 4-0 run to create a 17-8 lead after a service ace by
Krista Hassing. The Mavericks won set one, 25-21.
Both teams opened the second frame exchanging points to create a 13-13 deadlock. The Mavericks were then able to slowly build a 21-18 advantage and force the Peacocks to take a time out. The Mavericks were able to close out the match, 25-23, following a
Sarah Kuehn kill.
In the third and final set, Upper Iowa held a early two point, 10-8, edge before Minnesota State was able to tie the set at 10 after
Jackie Jones kill. The Mavericks then began to take control of the set with a 9-2 run to build 19-12 lead after a Hassing kill. Minnesota State went on to win the frame, 25-16, and the match, 3-0.
Hassing led the Mavericks with a match-high 15 kills while Jones added nine kills of her own. Sophomore
Autumn Risch contributed a match-best 40 assists while Senior
Haley Fogarty posted a match-high 22 digs.
Minnesota State held the edge in kills (46-33), assists (44-31), and digs (59-52).
The Mavericks have now won their last six consecutive home openers and move to 18-0 all-time against Upper Iowa.
With the win, Minnesota State moves to 7-3 (1-1 NSIC) on the season. The Mavericks will return to the Taylor Center on Tuesday to take on No. 1 Concordia-St. Paul with first serve set for 7:00 p.m.
