Beavers Upset #6 Mavericks Saturday Evening at Blakeslee Stadium

MANKATO, Minn. --- #6 Minnesota State's 10-game winning streak in home openers came to and end Saturday evening as it fell to Bemidji State 45-17.

With the win, BSU improves to 2-0 on the season, while MSU drops to 1-1.

In total, the Beavers tallied 563 yards of total offense, compared to 352 yards put up by the Mavericks. BSU notched 306 passing yards on the day and 257 yards on the ground, compared to MSU's 173 passing yards and 179 rushing yards.

Bemidji State wasted little time jumping out to a 14-0 lead as it reached the end zone on its first two possessions. Juwaan Richard caught a 55-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Hein to open the scoring, before running back Tahi Nomane ran into the end zone from two yards out to put the Beavers up 14-0 with 9:16 to go in the first quarter.

BSU added two more scores in the second quarter as the Beavers carried a 24-0 lead into halftime. Isaac Aanerud connected on a 38-yard field goal with 13:54 remaining in the second, before Hein posted a seven-yard touchdown carry with 6:38 to go in the half.

The Maverick offense started to get things going on its opening drive of the second half. MSU's drive, which was capped off by a five-yard touchdown run by freshman Ryan Schlichte, went 79 yards over 11 plays.

The Beavers, however, responded on the following drive as Nomane recorded his second touchdown run of the game, this time from one yard out, to but the Beavers back up by 24 at 31-7 with 6:27 to go in the third. The Mavericks managed to get one more score in the third quarter, a 31-yard field goal by freshman Anders Gelecinskyj to bring the score to 31-10 in favor of BSU.

The fourth quarter then saw Bemidji State seal the win with a pair of touchdowns. Nomane once again ran into the end zone from one yard out, before Hein recorded his second touchdown run with 5:54 to go to put BSU up 45-10. The Mavericks were able to get one final score in the fourth quarter as Schlichte connected with freshman Shane Zylstra on a one yard touchdown pass.

Schlichte finished the game with 112 passing yards and one touchdown pass, while senior Ricky Lloyd completed five passes for 61 yards. 

Senior Nick Pieruccini and Schlichte led the Mavericks in rushing as they tallied 53 and 51 rushing yards, respectively. Junior Ty Dennis led the MSU receiving corps with four catches for 42 yards as well.

On defense, senior Ruben Ibarra led the Mavericks with 13 tackles, while senior Marcus Gooden tallied 11. Senior Mat Andriano recovered a BSU fumble as well.

BSU's Hein finished the game with 306 passing yards and one touchdown, to go along with 82 rushing yards and two touchdown carries.

Gena Adams recorded 122 rushing yards, while Nomane posted 36 rushing yards and three touchdown carries. Juwaan Richard caught a total of five passes for 94 yards and a touchdown as well.

The Mavericks continue their season on the road on Saturday, Sept. 17, as they take on St. Cloud State. The opening kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
