ABERDEEN, S.D. --- The Minnesota State women's basketball team fell to No. 25 Northern State, 62-47, on the road at Wachs Arena.
The Mavericks captured an early 13-9 advantage and forced Northern State to burn a timeout after a
Sammie Delzotto jumper at the 5:28 mark. Minnesota State continued to find offense as
Taylor Klug found
Taylor Drost on the perimeter for the triple to grow the lead up to seven, 18-11, with 4:10 to play in the quarter. Minnesota State led after one quarter of play, 23-20.
Northern State got off to fast start in the second quarter stealing the lead, 26-25, after a jump shot with 7:33 on the clock. The Wolves then created a three point edge, 29-26, to force the Mavericks to use a timeout. Following the timeout, Drost banked two free throws and a layup to recapture the lead, 30-29, with 4:31 to play in the half. Northern State led at the intermission, 37-30.
The Mavericks pulled within five in the third quarter, 39-34, after Delzotto connected with Klug for a jumper at the 8:02 mark. The Wolves answered by growing a nine point, 43-34, advantage. Minnesota State then stole momentum with a 7-0 run to chip the lead down to two, 43-41, after an
Ana Boever free throw with 3:23 on the clock. Northern State took a 51-43 lead into the final quarter.
The Wolves continued to apply pressure in the fourth quarter stretching their lead into the double digits, 55-43. Delzotto responded to find the bottom net with a triple, 55-46, with 8:20 to play. Minnesota State struggled to find offense as Northern State went on close out the remaining minutes and pick up the 62-47 win.
Both teams finished the game deadlocked with 41 rebounds each. The Minnesota State bench contributed 26 points in comparison to Northern State bench which netted nine points.
Drost posted a team-best 13 points and added five rebounds. Ziegler collected a team-high 11 rebounds while Delzotto contributed 10 points to round out the top performers.
With the loss, Minnesota State moves to 7-4 (3-4 NSIC) on the season. The Mavericks return to Taylor Center on Jan. 6 to host Augustana. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
