Mavericks Travel to Black Hills State

MANKATO, Minn. ---  The Minnesota State women's basketball team continues nonconference play when it travels to Black Hills State on Friday. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. 

Mavericks at a Glance: The Mavericks have opened the season with back-to-back wins. Most recently, Minnesota State cruised to a 89-54 win over Missouri Southern State. Junior Claire Ziegler led the Mavericks with her second consecutive double-double performance with a team-high 12 rebounds and 15 points. 

Impact Mavericks: Junior Claire Ziegler leads the Mavericks in both points (14.5) and assists (11.5) per game. Additionally, she ranks third in the NSIC in rebounds. Senior Sammie Delzotto is contributing 13.0 points per game while freshman Taylor Klug is dishing out a team-best 3.0 assists per game. 

Stat Pack: As a team this season, Minnesota State is averaging 77.0 points per game in comparison to it's opponents 59.0. Additionally, the Mavericks are totaling 46.5 rebounds and 17.5 assists per game. 

Double Digits: Four Mavericks reached double digits in scoring against Missouri Southern State: senior Sammie Delzotto (20), junior Claire Ziegler (15), senior Britney Scherber (14) and freshman Taylor Klug (10).

The Charity Stripe: Minnesota State is posting a .707 free throw percentage through two games this season (41-58).

Collecting Boards: The Mavericks have a 15.5 rebounding margin this season. Minnesota State is collecting 46.5 rebounds per game in comparison to it's opponents 31.0. 

Closing out: Through two games this season, the Mavericks are out scoring opponents in the fourth quarter, 44-32. 

The Last Time: The Mavericks have not started a season 3-0 since the 2014-15 season. Minnesota State downed Maryville, 69-68, at the Missouri-St. Louis Tournament. 

Fresh Points: Six Mavericks recorded their first points last week: freshman Taylor Drost (16), freshman Taylor Klug (12), freshman Rachel Shumski (10), sophomore Mackenzie Dahl (5), freshman Megan Peschong (4) and freshman Lexi Schoper (2).

Player of the Week: Junior forward Claire Ziegler was named the NSIC South Division Player of the Week after her performance in two nonconference games last week. She collected a team-best 11 rebounds and added 14 points in the season opening 65-54 win over Missouri Western State. The Mankato, Minn., native then pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds and 15 points to aid in the Mavericks 89-64 victory versus' Missouri Southern State.

Scouting Black Hills State: Black Hills State is located in Spearfish, S.D., and has an overall record of 0-3. The Yellow Jackets are members of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC). In their most recent game, Black Hills State fell to Northern State, 59-40, in Billings, Mont. The Yellow Jackets are led by head coach Mark Nore, who is in his 15th season. 

These two schools have not met since the 2012 season when Minnesota State topped Black Hills State, 91-60, in Aberdeen, S.D., at the Northern State Tournament. The Mavericks lead the all-time series, 1-0. 

As a team this season, the Yellow Jackets are netting 42.7 points per contest in comparison to their opponents 61.3. Additionally, Blacks Hills State adds 30.7 rebounds per game and 9.7 assists per contest. 

Senior Sierra Toms leads the Yellow Jackets with a team-best 10.0 points per game. Senior Cheyanne Balster is notching a team-high 6.0 rebounds per contest while junior Rachel Erickson is contributing a team-leading 2.7 assists per game. 

Looking Ahead: Minnesota State will open conference play traveling to Wayne State on Dec. 2. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
