Box Score Wayne, Neb. --- The Minnesota State volleyball team's upset bid of No. 8 Wayne State fell short, 3-2 (23-25, 23-25, 25-19, 25-23,13-15), Friday evening at Rice Auditorium in front of 636 fans.
Both teams exchanged points throughout the opening frame to deadlock the set at 19. The Wildcats then created a two point, 22-20, lead. The Mavericks would battle back but fell short, 25-23, in the opening set.
In the second frame, a
Rissi McNallan service ace tied the set at 20 heading into the final stretch. The teams would then trade points until back-to-back Maverick errors proved to the difference and the Wildcats would close out the set, 25-23.
Following intermission, Minnesota State sprinted out to a 10-7 lead to force a Wayne State time out. The Mavericks then stretched the lead to seven, 21-14, following a
Sydney Powell kill. The Mavericks went on to win the set, 25-19.
The Mavericks trailed the Wildcats, 8-10, before battling back to tie the match at 10 in the fourth frame. The teams then exchanged points to lock the set at 22. The Mavericks closed the frame on a 3-1 run highlighted by
Morgan Olson kill. Minnesota State won the set, 25-23, to force a deciding fifth set.
In the fifth and final set, the Mavericks used an offensive explosion to create a five point, 7-2, edge after a
Krista Hassing kill. The Wildcats then responded with an 8-3 run to claw back and tie the frame at 10. Wayne State then went on to close out the frame, 15-13, and the match, 3-2.
Minnesota State held the edge in kills (69-59), assists (68-54), and digs (119-97). Additionally, the Mavericks added 14 blocks and five aces.
Senior
Haley Fogarty posted a season-high 35 digs which propelled her into first place on the all-time Maverick digs list. Hassing contributed a match-high 23 kills while Olson added 17 kills of her own. Sophomore
Autumn Risch rounded out the Maverick top performers with a career-best 60 assists.
With the loss, Minnesota State moves to 9-7 (3-5 NSIC) on the season. The Mavericks will return to the floor tomorrow to take on Augustana at 4:00 p.m.
