Mavericks Extend Win Streak to Four after 3-2 Win Over MSU Moorhead

Box Score Mankato, Minn. ---  The Minnesota State volleyball team downed MSU Moorhead, 3-2 (26-28, 25-20, 25-27, 26-24, 15-9), Friday afternoon at Taylor Center. With the win, the Mavericks have matched their longest winning streak of the season and longest  NSIC winning streak since the 2012 season. 

MSU Moorhead took control of the opening set with a 14-10 edge. The teams then traded points until Minnesota State locked the frame at 24 after a Sydney Powell kill. The Mavericks created a late one point advantage, 26-25, before the Dragons closed the frame on a 3-0 run to win the set, 28-26. 

The Mavericks responded by battling back with a quick 10-6 lead to force a MSU Moorhead time out. Later in the set, the Dragons cut the deficit down to one, 20-19. Minnesota State then answered with a 5-1 run to take the set, 25-20.

The third frame featured 14 tie scores and seven lead changes. Both teams traded points to lock the match at 20. Following a Sydney Geisness kill, the dragons responded with two straight kills to take a 22-21 lead. The Mavericks then used a 4-2 run to steal a 25-24 lead only to watch MSU Moorhead rattle off three straight points to win the frame, 27-25. 

The Dragons stormed out to a early 14-10 edge in the fourth set before Minnesota State put together a 6-1 run highlighted by a Powell service ace to take a 16-15 advantage. The Mavericks did not relinquish the lead and went on to win the set, 26-24, and force a deciding fifth set. 

Minnesota State sprinted out to a commanding 5-0 lead after three straight Powell kills to cause MSU Moorhead to use a time out. The Mavericks did not let up swelling their lead to seven, 11-4,forcing the dragons to use their second time out. Minnesota State did not look back and went on to win the frame, 15-9, and the match, 3-2.

Minnesota State held the edge in kills (75-56), assists (69-54), and digs (69-54). 

Sophomore Autumn Risch led the Mavericks with a career-best 62 assists while sophomore Maddie Keute also totaled a career-high 22 digs and four service aces. Additionally, Powell notched a career-best 28 kills and contributed 17 digs to round out the top performers.  

With the win, Minnesota State moves to 13-11 (7-9 NSIC) on the season. The Mavericks will travel to St. Cloud State on Nov. 4 with first serve set for 7:00 p.m.
