Nickel Reaches 100-Point Plateau in 4-3 Maverick Win on Sunday

Mankato, Minn. --- Senior midfielder Kiana Nickel tallied one goal and one assist to reach 100 career points in Minnesota State women's soccer's 4-3 win over the University of Mary on Sunday afternoon at The Pitch. 

Nickel, who entered Minnesota State's (11-3-2, 10-2-1 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) match against University of Mary (3-8-3, 3-7-2 NSIC) with 97 career points, recorded one assist and one goal to become the fifth student-athlete in program history to reach 100 career points. 

The Mavericks, who outshot the Marauders 12-3 in the first half and 22-12 in the match, took a 1-0 lead on senior midfielder Dana Savino's second goal of the season --the 15th of her career -- in the 11th minute. Nickel assisted on the play.

Junior midfielder Jenny Hoerter increased the Maverick lead to 2-0 at in the 27th minute with her first of two goals on the day. 

The Marauders fought back -- scoring the next two goals of the match. Cathey Caylin scored her first of two goals in the 36th minute. After halftime, Michelle Mcgeary scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season to tie the match at 2-2 in the 52nd minute. Alexis Nahring assisted on Caylin's goal and Emily Julian assisted on McGeary's score.

The Mavericks responded with the next two goals of the match.

After a foul in the box, Nickel scored her eighth goal of the season -- the 35th of her career -- on a penalty kick in the 63rd minute to put the Mavericks up 3-2. Under four minutes later, Hoerter garnered her second goal of the day -- her fourth of the season -- to make the score 4-2 in the 66th minute. Savino and freshman forward Taylor Kenealy assisted on the play Hoerter's second goal would turn out to be the game winner.

The Marauders pulled within one when Caylin scored her second goal of the match at in the 79th minute. Julian tallied her second assist of the day on the play.

Freshman goalkeeper Alexa Rabune (6-3-2), who made five saves, and the Maverick defense led by sophomore Morgan Seemuth, the reigning NSIC Defensive Player of the Week, held the Marauders at bay to preserve the 4-3 victory. 

Goalkeeper Karleen Pappert (0-2-1), who was put in goal for the Marauders to start the second half, picked up the loss.  

The Mavericks return to action at NSIC foe Winona State on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
