Mavericks Fall in Five Sets to No. 2 Minnesota Duluth

Box Score Mankato, Minn.  --- Minnesota State fell to No. 2 Minnesota Duluth, 3-2 (25-18, 20-25, 26-24, 21-25, 11-15), Saturday evening at Taylor Center.

Minnesota Duluth took control of the opening set with a 10-5 lead and forced Minnesota State into an early time out. The Mavericks then responded with a 5-0 run highlighted by an Autumn Risch ace to even the score at 10. Later in the set, Minnesota State held a one point, 18-17, edge before going on an 6-0 run to create a 24-17 advantage. The Mavericks took the first set, 25-18. 

After trading points early in set two the teams would find themselves deadlocked at 15. Minnesota Duluth then went on a 3-0 run to create a 18-15 lead. The Bulldogs would not surrender the edge and went on to steal the second frame, 25-20. 

Set three featured a match-high five lead changes and 13 tied scores with both teams trading points to lock the set at 10. The teams continued to exchange points until Minnesota State was able to build a three point,18-15, advantage after a Sarah Kuehn kill. The Bulldogs answered fighting back to knot the frame at 24. The Mavericks then rattled off two straight points highlighted by a Morgan Olson kill to win the frame, 26-24.   

In the fourth set, both teams continued to fight until Minnesota Duluth was able to take control with a three point, 21-18, lead. The Bulldogs went on to win the set, 25-21, and force a decisive fifth set. 

In the fifth and final set, Minnesota Duluth jumped out to an early 7-4 edge causing Minnesota State to burn a time out. The Mavericks cut the deficit down to two, 10-8, after a Krista Hassing kill. The Bulldogs went on to close out the set, 15-11, and the match, 3-2. 

Senior Haley Fogarty led the Mavericks with a match-high 19 digs. The Mavericks had three players reach double figures in kills: junior Jackie Jones (15), Hassing (19), Olson (12). Risch also recorded a team-best 54 assists. 

Minnesota Duluth held the edge in assists (60-59), digs (59-51), and kills (66-64).

With the loss, Minnesota State moves to 9-6 (3-4 NSIC) on the season. The Mavericks will travel to Wayne State Oct. 2 with first serve set for 7:00 p.m.
