Mavericks Upended by Lindenwood 3-1 Monday Afternoon

Lindenwood scored two goals in the last two minutes to defeat Minnesota State

Box Score MANKATO, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's hockey team took a disappointing loss on Monday afternoon in Mankato.  The Lady Lions of Lindenwood University, now 5-13-4 (2-4-4 CHA) on the season, netted two goals within the last two minutes of the match to come away with the victory.

The Mavericks jumped out to an early lead in Monday's game as they were able to thread the puck past Lindenwood's goaltender Nicole Hensley at 3:09 of the first period. Sophomore Hannah Davidson (Kincardine, Ont.) dished the puck down into the left corner to senior Katie Johnson (Anoka, Minn.).  Johnson then carried the puck down towards the back of the Lindenwood net where she backhanded the puck to out front to and open Elin Johansson (Hudiksvall, Swe.) to finish the play for her fifth goal on the season.  Lindenwood was able to even things up with just under two minutes to go in the stanza.  Shannon Morris-Reade fed the Lady Lions leading-scorer Shara Jasper at the 18:19 mark, to take a tie going into the second period.

A scoreless second frame carried the 1-1 score over to the third period where Lindenwood was able to net two past Minnesota State goaltender, junior Brianna Quade (Newcastle, Ont.). The game looked like it was going to go into an extra period before the Mavericks gave Lindenwood a power-play opportunity at 16:55.  With only 33 second left on their man advantage, LU broke the 1-1 tie when Emily Gunderson shot home a marker that was passed by Tae Otte and Carrie Atkinson.  The Lady Lions cemented the win 38 seconds later as Jasper scored her third goal of the series, for a final score of 3-1.

At the end of the 60-minute contest, Lindenwood owned a shots on goal advantage by a clip of 23-18 while Quade claimed 20 saves.

With a short week to prepare, Minnesota State (3-16-1, 0-14-0 WCHA) will return to action this coming Friday as they host St. Cloud State University at Verizon Wireless Center. Puck drop is slated for 2:07 p.m. in Mankato.
