Minnesota State Takes Early Lead But Is Unable To Hang On In 2-1 Loss At No. 3 Minnesota

Quade records season-high 48 saves in game.

Box Score MINNEAPOLIS,  Minn.  ---    Minnesota State took a lead at 6:26 of the first period and held it until 6:22 of the third period against the number three team in the nation.

In the first period of action, it was Minnesota State who would take an early advantage when the Gophers were called for a hooking infraction at 6:19.  Sophomore Hannah Davidson (Kinkardine, Ont.) would capitalize on the man advantage just seven seconds later unassisted, grabbing Minnesota State's first lead of the weekend.  The Mavericks killed off two penalties later in the period, bringing the frame to a close with Minnesota piloting a lead in shots on goal of 18-2.

The second period saw almost as many shots as the first as Minnesota generated another 15 to mark their total at 33 in the first 40 minutes while Minnesota State generated another two, calculating their total at four.  The Mavericks also killed off one more penalty in the stanza, keeping the Gophers off of the scoreboard and bringing their lead of 1-0 into the third period.

The third period saw a two Gopher goals that propelled the third-rated team in the country to their 20th victory on the season. At 6:22, Lee Stecklein notched things up at one goal apiece on the power-play when she tapped home a back-door pass past Minnesota State goaltender, junior Brianna Quade (Newcastle, Ont.).  Just six minutes later, it was Megan Wolfe who put Minnesota on top for the first time all game. At 12:27 Wolfe received a pass from Kate Schipper at the point and fired the puck on net where Quade was screened by what looked like 13 different players.  Minnesota would hold onto the lead from there on out to see a final at 2-1.

Quade tallied up a season-high 48 saves by the time the final whistle blew.  The Maverick penalty-kill fended off three of four Gopher power-plays while going one for one on their power-play opportunity.

Minnesota State continues the season next weekend as they return home to host Ohio State University in Mankato.  The two WCHA tilts at Verizon Wireless Center are scheduled for 2:07 p.m. starts.
