Minnesota State Splits on Final Day at Flyer Festival

Romeoville, Ill. - The Minnesota State volleyball team concluded its final day at the Flyer Festival with a sweep over Ohio Dominican, before being swept by Lewis (Ill.)

The Mavericks took care of business with Ohio Dominican in match one as they swept the Panthers (25-19, 25-21, 25-15) to begin their day. MSU put together a well-balanced offensive attack against ODU, as four Mavericks posted eight more kills in the match.

Junior middle blocker Krista Hassing [Blue Earth, Minn.] led MSU with 13 kills and three total blocks, while junior outside hitter Sydney Geisness [St. Croix Falls, Wis.] tallied 10 kills and a .385 attack percentage. Both junior middle blockers Courtney Anderson [Tripoli, Iowa] and Lexi Platz [Lafayette, Minn.] each recorded eights kills, while Anderson also tallied a .421 attack percentage.

In set one MSU and ODU fought point for point early on as the set was all tied up at 9-9, before the Mavericks created some breathing room for themselves. The Mavericks went on a 9-2 run against Panthers to put the score at 18-11. MSU closed the door through the rest of set to give the Mavericks the 25-19 set one win.

In the second frame of play, MSU had come from behind to pick of the set win, as the Mavericks were down as four a couple of times early on in the set. The Purple and Gold were still down against the Panthers, 21-19, however after that it was all MSU. The Mavericks scored six of the last seven points in the set to give them the 25-22 set win. Three of those six points were scored by Hassing.

In the third and final set again it was a close contest midway through the set as it was tied up at 10-10. From that point on it was all Mavericks again as they went to close the set and match after going on a 15-5 run. MSU held ODU to just a .026 attack percentage in the set and Hassing, Anderson and Geisness each recorded three kills.

Senior setter Ellie Van De Steeg [Hutchinson, Minn.] led MSU in the match with 38 assists to go along with nine digs, while junior libero Haley Fogarty [Belle Plaine, Minn.] added a match-high 27 digs.

In match two against Lewis (Ill.), the Mavericks were swept (25-21, 25-21, 25-18), as MSU was held to a .121 attack percentage while the Flyers doubled that number with a .250 attack percentage.

In set one it was all tied up at 14-14, before Lewis went on a little 5-1 run to put the Flyers up 19-15 over the Mavericks. That run proved to be the difference as Lewis went on to take the set 25-21.

In the second frame, things were looking good for the Mavericks as they were able to build a 17-11 lead which forced a Flyers timeout. However, after the timeout, MSU was unable to hold onto the lead, as the Mavericks were outscored 14-4 by Lewis which gave the Flyers the 25-21 second set win.

In the third and final set of the match the two teams fought point for point midway through the frame, 11-11, before Lewis again took things over in the set. The Flyers went on another 8-2 run to put the score at 19-13 over MSU. Lewis went on to take the third set, 25-18, over the Mavericks.

Once again Hassing led the team with 16 kills and a .314 attack percentage, while Platz added seven kills of her own. Van De Steeg collected 23 more assists in the match and Fogarty posted 16 digs to her statline.

With today's results, the Mavericks overall record falls to 6-2 overall.

The Mavericks have now wrapped up its nonconference portion of its schedule and will now head into conference play. The Mavericks will begin Thursday, Sept. 17, as NSIC foe Winona State comes into town. The match will not only mark as its first conference game but also it will be the Mavericks home opener at Taylor Center. Thursday's match is set for a 7 p.m. start time.
