AUBURNDALE, Fla. --- The Mavericks offense continued to stay hot during the early portion of the season as they defeated Drury University, 10-6, Friday afternoon at the RussMatt Invitational.
Minnesota State didn't waste anytime scoring as they posted three runs in the first inning. Sophomore
Eric Peterson led off the game with a double and with one out, senior
Max Waletich drew a walk putting runners on first and second. Senior
Nolan Johnson smashed a double to bring home Peterson and move Waletich to third. Back-to-back singles by junior
Taylor Branstad and redshirt freshman
Josh Wenzel plated Waletich and Johnson to put MSU up 3-0 before the Panthers even came up to bat.
Sophomore
Mitchell Bauer stranded runners on first and third in his first inning of work but the Panthers scored one run in the bottom of the second to make the score 3-1. The Mavericks and Panthers traded runs in the fourth inning to bring the score to 4-2.
Senior
Nick Veale came in to relieve Bauer in the fourth inning and only surrendered two runs, both unearned, as the Mavericks offense exploded for six runs in the seventh inning.
After Peterson walked and a sacrifice bunt by junior
Kyle Toth, Waletich hit an RBI single to push the score to 5-4. Johnson and senior
Connor McCallum hit back-to-back singles to bring up Branstad with the bases loaded and he hit and three-run single to increase the lead. Later in the inning senior
Kevin Kramer hit a two-run triple and that was enough of a lead for the Mavericks to move to 3-0 on the season.
Bauer gave up five hits and four runs, two of those earned, through 4 1/3 innings pitched. Veale, who picked up his first win of the season, did not allow an earned run scattering six hits and struck out seven over 4 2/3 innings.
Branstad lead the offensive charge going 2-5 with four RBI and one run scored. Peterson went 2-2 with two runs and Johnson went 3-5 with two runs scored and one RBI.
Minnesota State will continue action tomorrow morning when they face Ashland University at 11:30 a.m. in Auburndale, Fla.
